The more concentrated wine of the three Bordeaux-inspired wines outside of the Tally Reserve. Black olive, bay leaf, graphite and cassis swirl about, bolstered by a sheen of sexy oak, following an extended 18 months in French gear (50% new). This is a crowd-pleaser already, with ample fruit and coffee grind tannins tapering to a long finish. This said, it will age prodigiously.
96 points. Ned Goodwin MW, James Halliday Wine Companion 2020

Vintage 2016 was warm early, with cool night-time temperatures later in the season. Cabernet Sauvignon (97%) from our Walker Block, Old Paulownia vineyard and Dead Morris vineyard was blended with Petit Verdot (3%) from Dunstan. The Balnaves Cabernet Sauvignon spent 18 months in tight-grained French oak from Sylvain, Taransaud and Berger cooperages. It was bottled in December 2017.

Deep rich red in colour, the nose is very perfumed with aromas of wild blackberry, lavender and red fruits combined with fine vanilla French oak. The palate is structured and elegant with ripe cassis fruit and a fine tannin finish. – Jacinta Jenkins, Balnaves

Description

Balnaves wines are 100% Coonawarra, and produced exclusively from fruit grown by the Balnaves Family in Coonawarra.

Our aim is to produce consistently high quality wines from fruit sourced from our own Coonawarra vineyards, reflecting the unique flavours, character and quality of fruit grown in this area, as well as the variation of seasons in this cool climate area.

Our winemaking philosophy is to maximize and build complexity and structure in all the wines. Rather than focus on simple varietal fruit characters, the wines show complex fruit oak and tannin aromas, and rich yet fine palate structures, with noticeable texture as well as flavour on the finish.

Our wines are made to be aged and are best after several years of cellaring. The wines are best enjoyed with food, which highlights the mouthfeel qualities which our wines produce.

They are wines that taste of where they come from, and though they’re steeped in history and stamped with the signature of their terroir, they’re more than ever relevant – and desirable – to the Australian diner of today.
