Aromas of eucalypt, oak-spice, vanilla, Ribena, and red plums. Still vibrant when sipped, wrapped around a sinewy spine of tannins and dried herbs. Serious and structured. Lots of life left.
93 points. Nick Butler, The Real Review February 2020

Vintage 2014 was cool with very slow ripening after Christmas and cool night-time temperatures. Cabernet Sauvignon (80%) from our Dead Morris, Walker and Avery vineyards, was blended with Rise Merlot (19.5%) and Dunstan Petit Verdot (0.5%).
This 2014 Balnaves Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot spent 18 months in tight-grain French oak from Sylvain, St Martin and Seguin Moreau cooperages, before bottling in December 2015.

Deep rich red in colour, the nose is concentrated with aromas of pure cassis, violets, blackberry, combined with fine mocha-coffee French oak. The palate is rich with ripe cassis fruit and a structured tannin finish.

Description

Balnaves wines are 100% Coonawarra, and produced exclusively from fruit grown by the Balnaves Family in Coonawarra.

Our aim is to produce consistently high quality wines from fruit sourced from our own Coonawarra vineyards, reflecting the unique flavours, character and quality of fruit grown in this area, as well as the variation of seasons in this cool climate area.

Our winemaking philosophy is to maximize and build complexity and structure in all the wines. Rather than focus on simple varietal fruit characters, the wines show complex fruit oak and tannin aromas, and rich yet fine palate structures, with noticeable texture as well as flavour on the finish.

Our wines are made to be aged and are best after several years of cellaring. The wines are best enjoyed with food, which highlights the mouthfeel qualities which our wines produce.

CellarHand is a fine-wine importer and wholesale distributor, with a portfolio featuring some of the most sought-after estates of Germany, Austria, France and Italy, as well some of the greatest producers from Australia and New Zealand. Our ethos has always been to build a portfolio as you’d construct the perfect wine list. We work with small, family producers who express the best of their regions. The wines we sell are the wines we enjoy, and the people who make them are like family to us. They are wines that taste of where they come from, and though they’re steeped in history and stamped with the signature of their terroir, they’re more than ever relevant – and desirable – to the Australian diner of today.
