Produced from what is nearly a monopole grand cru – Domaine Taupenot-Merme owns 0.004ha – Clos das Lambrays is always marked by its 90% whole bunches, but the style is very well done in 2017 under new cellarmaster, Boris Champy. With 50% new wood framing the palate, this is subtle, nuanced and focussed, with polished tannins and bright acidity. Drinking Window 2025 – 2035. (TA) (10/2018)

The 2017 Clos des Lambrays was still quite youthful, but was showing truly stunning potential on both the nose and palate. The bouquet is still fairly primary, but sports outstanding depth and nascent complexity in its constellation of cassis, black cherries, sweet dark berries, exotic touches of both eucalyptus and lavender, a superb base of soil, heather and a sound foundation of cedary new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and suave on the attack, with sappy core, excellent soil signature, fine-grained tannins and a long, closed and classy finish. The oak component here is beautifully done and there are absolutely no issues with the wine’s ultimate balance, but I had the sensation that it was clamping down on the wine a bit more than was customary for Clos des Lambrays as this point in its evolution. Perhaps it was just my imagination, as the wine will no doubt be absolutely superb in the fullness of time. (Drink between 2027-2085) (12/2018)

The 2017 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru opens in the glass with expressive aromas of sweet berry fruit, plums and orange rind that mingle with nuances of forest floor, smoked meats, cedar and spices. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, supple and open-knit, with succulent acids and moderate concentration, concluding with a nicely defined finish. I expect this to flesh out a little as it bounces back from bottling. (WK) (1/2020)

There are whiffs of herbal tea, floral and spice influences on the essence of red berry aromas that are trimmed in soft wood and earth nuances. The mouthfeel of the medium-bodied flavors is beautifully sleek thanks to the dense but fine-grained tannins shaping the attractively refreshing, youthfully austere and long finale that is quite linear rather than rich. This should further flesh out with bottle age though that will require at least some cellaring. (1/2020)

The 2017 Clos des Lambrays: vinified and blended by Thierry Brouin, raised and racked by Boris Champy and bottled by current winemaker Jacques Desvauges. Got it? Good. There is just a touch of reduction on the nose, which is perhaps a little smudged and a bit static compared to the nascent 2018. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and dark berry fruit laced with clove, bay leaf and sage. The linear finish lacks some depth and grip. Not bad, though not the best in recent years. K&L Notes

93-95pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy
“Just blended. 90% whole bunch. 50% new wood. Rich glowing purple. The nose is exceptionally sensual and not aggressively whole bunch. Svelte and sensual, more raspberry than cherry, some deep strawberry fruit too and a little pepper, but only at the back of the palate. This fills the mouth though never more than medium density. But the persistence is there. This is a relatively low acid wine, with a pH of 3.57, the highest since 2006.” (10/2018)

About Clos des Lambrays

Clos des Lambrays is an Appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for red wine in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, with Pinot noir as the main grape variety. It is situated in the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte-d’Or département, and is located immediately to the southwest of the village Morey-Saint-Denis. The Clos part of its name refers to a wall-enclosed vineyard. Clos des Lambrays was elevated from premier cru to grand cru status in 1981, which meant that it was created as a separate AOC.

Clos de Lambrays totals 8.84 hectares (21.8 acres) and most of it (8.66 hectares (21.4 acres)) is owned by the winery Domaine des Lambrays. However, Domaine Taupenot-Merme also has a small holding in this vineyard, so Domaine des Lambrays is unable to put a “Monopole” label on its bottles.
