STORY

The Adelaide Hills is fast becoming synonymous with producing high quality Gruner Veltliner. We’ve taken this one step further and focused on two individual vineyard expressions of this sophisticated variety. The warmer of the two sites, the Springhill vineyard in Macclesfield has a slightly lower elevation that is expressed in more overt characters and a richer, fuller weight that’s enhanced by an element of skin fermentation and oak maturation.

We’ve been working Gruner from the Springhill site in Macclesfield for 4 vintages now, and we’re smitten. With consistant flavours of almond, marzipan and quince, this vineyard is all about texture and generosity, begetting a wine that is approachable yet incredibly complex at the same time, showing layer on layer of curious Gruner characteristics.

WINEMAKING

Machine harvested, destemmed, then split into two batches – one third fermented on skins and the remainder pressed and wild fermented in barrel. Partial, spontaneous MLF was stopped and both batches were aged for 6 months in puncheons.

TASTING NOTES

SMELL: White stone fruit, marzipan, quince.

PALATE: Bursting with delicious fruit that resolves into a generous level of texture balanced by a cleansing acidity.

PAIR WITH: Chicken caesar salad, creamy pesto pasta.

CELLAR: Up to 10 Years

Based in McLaren Vale, South Australia, Alpha Box & Dice are embarking on an Alphabet of Wine. Each ‘letter’ embodies an individual winemaking project, with the end goal being a complete collection of wines that celebrates the diverse styles and varieties found in South Australia’s famous wine regions, including McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills and Barossa Valley.

Since its beginning in 2008, AB&D has become a champion of South Australia’s alternative – particularly Mediterranean – varieties, exhibiting innovation at every step of the process by bending traditional winemaking norms.
