A light and delicate style of Shiraz that is aromatic with the scent of raspberry, cherry, and juicy plums. The Shiraz fruit has provided balance and structure to produce a perfumed wine that is delicious and food friendly.

Medium bodied, fresh with plenty of energy, red fruits scream for attention. Think strawberries, red cherries, and red currants. White pepper, some char and crunchy red apple acidity add further pleasure. A little texture for good measure coupled with a whole lot of slurp factor, another glass please.

The fruit for the Syrah was grown at Bendigo and was handpicked at the right moment to balance the soft and juicy fruit flavours with crisp acid to produce an elegant and refined wine.

Winemaking Notes
In the winery the fruit was destemmed and partially crushed with 20% left as whole berries and a portion of free run juice was also added. These techniques help to increase the fresh fruit favours in the finished wine. The fruit was left to cold soak before undergoing wild yeast fermentation over 14 days. At dryness, the wine was aged on lees for five months in old French oak barrels before being bottled.

Description

Balgownie Estate Wines was the first vineyard planted in the Bendigo district in more than 80 years and began the re-emergence of Bendigo as a significant area for wine production.

The 33 hectare vineyard is situated on a gentle slope overlooking Myer’s Creek at Maiden Gully. This superb site of alluvial soil has major plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and shiraz with smaller amounts of pinot noir, chardonnay, merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot, viognier and sangiovese. Balgownie Estate’s Yarra Valley vineyards were planted in 2002 to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
