Shiraz is one of the original plantings at our vineyard in Bendigo where the continental climate and alluvial soils produce ideal ripening conditions. Shiraz has been produced by Balgownie Estate since the very first vintage in 1972.

The vineyard at Bendigo has consistently produced sensational fruit that forms the backbone of this extraordinary wine that combines a rich weighty body with elegance and structure that is delightful to drink as a young wine, yet will reward careful cellaring over 16 years.

Red/crimson to the rim. A bouquet of red fruits with plums and dark cherries showing along with savoury toasty oak and cola notes. Youthful fruit flavours marry to meaty notes and light herbaceous whole bunch characters. Shows an elegant and fine frame of tannins as they guide the palate to a long and sustained finish.

Needs time but all the components are there to amply reward cellaring whilst beautifully balanced for current drinking.

Description

Balgownie Estate Wines was the first vineyard planted in the Bendigo district in more than 80 years and began the re-emergence of Bendigo as a significant area for wine production.

The 33 hectare vineyard is situated on a gentle slope overlooking Myer’s Creek at Maiden Gully. This superb site of alluvial soil has major plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and shiraz with smaller amounts of pinot noir, chardonnay, merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot, viognier and sangiovese. Balgownie Estate’s Yarra Valley vineyards were planted in 2002 to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
