Comprising 37% whole bunches in the ferment and matured 14 months in 35% new French oak. A lot is packed into this wine, yet it takes everything in its stride and comes out as a more mid-weighted offering. Dark sweet fruits abound. So, too, spices, dark chocolate, coffee grounds and a sprinkle of crushed bay leaves. The tannins have some grit, yet are shapely and ripe. Oak adds some sweet, cedary seasoning, and is well incorporated.

95 points. Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion 2022

2019 Balnaves Shiraz is grown on our Old Paulownia vineyard, which was planted in 1973 from pre-clonal planting material.
The 2019 growing season brought slightly higher temperatures but these were countered by some cooler nights in March, allowing for long slow ripening. Shiraz was picked on 28th March.

Old Paulownia vineyard is one of the most southern Shiraz sites in Coonawarra, it is low yielding and ripens later than most. Hand-picked at 13.8 Baumé, the Shiraz was fermented for eight days with 37% whole bunch, before being matured in new (35%) and seasoned French oak; St Martin Tronçais Jupilles hogshead and François Frères Allier Puncheons. After 14 months in oak this single parcel was bottled.

The aim to make a light- medium bodied Shiraz with bright aromatics and lifted perfume, fresh blackberry and mulberry fruit and an elegant palate. – Jacinta Jenkins, Balnaves

About Balnaves

Balnaves wines are 100% Coonawarra, and produced exclusively from fruit grown by the Balnaves Family in Coonawarra.

Our aim is to produce consistently high quality wines from fruit sourced from our own Coonawarra vineyards, reflecting the unique flavours, character and quality of fruit grown in this area, as well as the variation of seasons in this cool climate area.

Our winemaking philosophy is to maximize and build complexity and structure in all the wines. Rather than focus on simple varietal fruit characters, the wines show complex fruit oak and tannin aromas, and rich yet fine palate structures, with noticeable texture as well as flavour on the finish.

Our wines are made to be aged and are best after several years of cellaring. The wines are best enjoyed with food, which highlights the mouthfeel qualities which our wines produce.

CellarHand is a fine-wine importer and wholesale distributor, with a portfolio featuring some of the most sought-after estates of Germany, Austria, France and Italy, as well some of the greatest producers from Australia and New Zealand. Our ethos has always been to build a portfolio as you’d construct the perfect wine list. We work with small, family producers who express the best of their regions. The wines we sell are the wines we enjoy, and the people who make them are like family to us. They are wines that taste of where they come from, and though they’re steeped in history and stamped with the signature of their terroir, they’re more than ever relevant – and desirable – to the Australian diner of today.
