The Bannockburn Chardonnay is drawn chiefly from the Estate’s Olive Tree Hill Vineyard (planted in 1976) and Winery Block (1981), which are both on volcanic soils over limestone, with an average vine age of around 35 years. Whole-bunch pressed and settled overnight, the juice was then wild-fermented in mainly 500-litre French oak hogsheads (20% new), with 70% undergoing malolactic. The wine spent 10 months on lees with no stirring, and no sulphur was added until bottling.

Combining both power and finesse, you’ll find aromas of orchard pear and fig fruit, licked with citrus, ripe white peaches and some roasted cashew complexity. In classic Bannockburn mould, the flow is seamless. It’s both mouth-filling and lithe; a release bursting with flavour and an equally engaging measure of savoury restraint.

“Straw-coloured but then fresh and pear-like on the palate. Interesting wine, quite distinctive, with flashes of quartz and sweet cedar matched to gun smoke and lemon curd. It has both length and intensity on its side, along with complexity, but perhaps not harmony. It’s not close to ready; it needs time.” 93+ points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Red 5 Star Rated Winery – By James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2020

At Bannockburn terroir is taken very seriously with a site specific and Burgundian/Rhône like approach to vineyard management but without discounting quality for the sake of personality. Winemaker Matt Holmes has taken on the principles of making wines with great diligence and passion; orchestrating organic practice, a belief in dry grown viticulture, vine age and close planting. In the winery they favour wild ferment, use of whole bunches, extended maceration times, extended lees contact and fastidious barrel selection processes to make wines that are exciting, unique and clearly identifiable as ‘Bannockburn’.

Bannockburn Vineyards established by Stuart Hooper in 1974, is situated outside the township of Bannockburn, Victoria. Over the past 4 decades Bannockburn has achieved a reputation for handcrafting wines that are individual, complex and elegant. Wines which genuinely reflect the flavours of highly regarded vineyards; wines which are produced with a purist, uncompromising approach to winemaking.

All Bannockburn wines are made from fruit grown on our long-established estate in the Geelong wine region. The meticulously tended vineyards and the “hands-off” approach by winemaker Matt Holmes result in wines that are exciting, complex and uniquely Bannockburn.

Matt Holmes commenced making the wines at Bannockburn Vineyards in 2015. He sees his role as a servant to the vineyard, growing season and fruit to produce wines representative of our style and site. Above all, gentle inputs and minimal additions are his goal. In his words, “Well-nourished vines grown in a suitable spot, picked on the right day, transcribed as wine.”

Previously, Matt had been making wine in the Okanagan wine region of British Columbia, Canada. During these 10 years he also gained a broad range of experience working additional vintages in the U.S., France, Italy, New Zealand as well as Australia.

On the one hand, our role as a merchant of all things wine & spirits could not be simpler. We aim to source the most delicious, the most authentic, and the highest quality products possible from Australia and around the world in order to offer them to our clients. We live or die by how well we perform this task. Of course things are rarely as simple or as easy as they seem. Hunting for wines & spirits is no different. Apart from the months spent travelling, countless days and evenings spent tasting and the outrageous wine expenditure in the name of ‘research’, sourcing quality wine and spirits requires expertise and experience. Understanding the potential of a producer and their products is much more than just a slurp and a spit.
