Bondar’s flagship release hails from a 0.7-hectare block of old vines planted in the Rayner vineyard, on sandy soils over yellow clay. This particular bottling is sourced from the lowest yielding vines, which are now 50 years old, situated on the western side of the block and produce very small berries and bunches. Says Andre, “We really want the Rayner Grenache to be a pretty, yet savoury wine, and generally a lighter expression of the variety than most examples in our region. We believe that this is what our 1970 block wants to produce so we just try to let it express itself as best as we can.”

Bondar ended up using around 20% whole bunches in 2019, to add more savoury notes and fine structure for aging. Two-thirds of the wine was aged in old oak hogsheads, with the balance in ceramic vessels. All this has resulted in a beautifully aromatic, pure and mineral Grenache, scented with wonderful raspberry and spice fruit and framed by fine, powdery tannins and mouthwatering freshness. To be frank, this is simply too cheap for the quality. All class. McLaren Vale Grenache in its purest guise.

“Rayner Vineyard planted in 1970. It sits on the southern tip of Blewitt Springs. Red fruit, perfume of herbs and roses, cut fennel, spice and almond meal. It’s fresh, but flavoursome, some sap and spice, raspberry and basil, fine chalk dust tannin, perfume of dried herb and juicy red fruits to close. Well here’s another fine Grenache we’ve gotten ourselves into.” 94 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

“Attractive, fresh red flowers and raspberries sit bright in this single-vineyard bottling. The palate has elegant, long and smooth appeal with fresh red berries and impressively detailed tannins that hold smooth at the finish. Impressive. Drink or hold. Screw cap.” 93 points, Nick Stock, JamesSuckling.com

Fine Wine Cellars

On the one hand, our role as a merchant of all things wine & spirits could not be simpler. We aim to source the most delicious, the most authentic, and the highest quality products possible from Australia and around the world in order to offer them to our clients. We live or die by how well we perform this task. Of course things are rarely as simple or as easy as they seem. Hunting for wines & spirits is no different. Apart from the months spent travelling, countless days and evenings spent tasting and the outrageous wine expenditure in the name of ‘research’, sourcing quality wine and spirits requires expertise and experience. Understanding the potential of a producer and their products is much more than just a slurp and a spit.
