The Bowen’s latest release Cabernet sauvignon shows particularly aromatic fruit of the vintage – in this instance, a pure mulberry – like varietal fragrance meshing perfectly with a sweet cedary note of oak. This sweet cedary fruit – oak combination carries through the rich, elegantly structured palate.

The growing season for 2021 started with very mild conditions during spring followed by a dry summer. The grapes were small and had thick skins. The mild stable conditions continued throughout the ripening period leading to an extended vintage. Optimal flavour development occurred slowly. A hallmark of this vintage is fresh acidity well balanced with good fruit and tannin profiles.

The palate is opulent in the darker fruit range with a touch of particularly attractive black olive. Depth and interest to the palate are aided by mulberry fruit characters which enhance and liven the palate. After 18 months maturation in French oak barriques, the classic cedary/oak flavours are balanced with terra rossa earthiness and add to the fine mid weight Coonawarra tannin structure. This tannin structure is a hallmark of our wines, ensuring the wine is imminently attractive whilst it is young, but has the pedigree to last the years in the cellar.

The Bowen family is proud to guarantee the origin of this wine. All grapes used are grown and harvested from our sustainably grown vineyards located on Coonawarra’s famous terra rossa soil.

About Bowen Estate

Doug and Joy Bowen established their 33 ha vineyard in 1972. In recent years daughter Emma joined the family business, boosting the workforce and probably contributing to a lift in wine quality.

Much of our philosophy for the style of wine that we like to produce begins with the vineyard. Firstly, the location of our vineyard is on the traditional prime terra rossa soil of Coonawarra.

This is of the utmost importance to us. Secondly, we have a very strong belief in the traditional hand pruning of our vines, combined with an arch cane trellis system. This improves the evenness of budburst, bunch exposure and ripeness, but more importantly, this method of pruning ensures that we have a balanced vine.

Therefore the vine will produce fruit of optimum quality. It is this optimum fruit that makes our bench mark wines which reflect the true characteristics of Coonawarra – strong varietal aromas, big flavours and soft balanced tannins.
