Description

Brackenwood is owned by Damon Nagel, who started life as a sommelier in Adelaide before moving to London in his mid-twenties, where he worked in several of London’s top restaurants. After a number of successful years he moved back to Australia, where he purchased a stunning property in the Adelaide Hills. Here he set about establishing the Brackenwood name.

Damon has since employed Laz Horvath as winemaker. Laz was born and raised in Hungary and is a winemaker with extensive international experience. He has completed vintages in Europe (several in Burgundy), California, New Zealand and with Brackenwood in Australia since 2010. Laz lives on the Brackenwood property where he manages the vineyard and winery.

Brackenwood Vineyard is located within the beautiful Hope Forest, nestled high in the Adelaide Hill’s sub-region of Kuitpo. The property is set in the most southern section of the Hills and was once a deer farm, where some deer still remain.

The Vineyard is biodynamic and all fruit is Estate grown. The vines grow on a variety of undulating slopes, 360-400 metres high in soils that are ironstone and quartz over clay subsoil.

Brackenwood strictly adheres to biodynamic winemaking principles and believe this is the ultimate form of sustainable production working in harmony with natural ecosystems.

While Brackenwood wholeheartedly believe in the biodynamic winemaking philosophy, the real benefit has to be in the enjoyment of the wines themselves.

Using biodynamic principles allows Brackenwood to capture regional character and vintage variation. This comes from handpicking grapes in small batches, which are then wild fermented using the vineyard’s indigenous yeasts. Maturation takes place in French and Hungarian oak barriques and minimal filtration allows our wines to develop to their full potential.
