Despite being one of the entry wines in the range, Terroirs is already one of Champagne’s most compelling Blanc de Blancs. It is 100% Grand Cru with the fruit coming from only great sites across four villages in the Côte des Blancs: Avize, Cramant, Oger and Oiry. Together with the terroir, the vine age is also a key factor in the quality on offer (an average age of over 40 years).

This release is a blend of 2016 and 2015, with the reserve wine making up a significant 60% of the blend. After a natural fermentation, half the wine matured in large format, neutral oak and then spent up to 48 months on lees. Dosage was limited to five grams per litre and disgorgement carried out by hand in October 2020.

These winemaking standards, combined with the organic viticulture, reach benchmarks that are far higher than any Grande Marque prestige cuvée we know of. This is a brilliant Terroirs. It offers the classic Agrapart pillowy texture, with ripe nectarine, yellow peach and earthy fruit notes and an arrow-straight spine of saline minerality. A pulpy and vibrant study of Côte des Blancs greatness that’s utterly delicious.

“The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Terroirs is a very pretty wine among the entry-level selections in this range. Bright and vibrant in the glass, the Terroirs bristles with energy, the blend of fruit from sites in Avize, Oger, Cramant and Oiry works so well here. Citrus, white flowers, white pepper and crushed rocks add a super appealing upper register. This release is a blend of equal parts 2016 and 2015, with about 25% of the wine done in neutral oak. Dosage is 5 grams per liter. Best of all, the Terroirs is a superb value.”

Description

The Grand Cru Terroirs Blanc de Blancs is Agrapart’s main cuvee, blending fruit from four Grand Cru villages; Avize, Cramant, Oger, and Oiry.

Roughly half of the blend is made up of reserve wine, and it spends four years on lees before disgorgement, making for a blisteringly-good Champagne of quiet complexity and power.

This is not a rich, yeasty style though; it is a Champagne of pure Chardonnay freshness and zest, with a stunning, chalky intensity.

If you’re in the market for an elite Blanc de Blancs, you’ll find no better value than this offering from Pascal – it beats prestige large house wines into a grapey pulp!

About Champagne Agrapart

Pascal Agrapart is a benchmark producer of small-batch grower Champagne, based in the Chardonnay capital of Champagne, the village of Avize.

Like a painter blending colours on his palette, Pascal combines 70 different micro-plots in the Côte des Blancs to create wines of incredible complexity and detail. He is often compared, in quality terms, to his (much more famous) neighbour, Anselme Selosse, though their styles are worlds apart. Pascal pursues purity and detail as opposed to the out-and-out power of Selosse.

Producing no more than 6000 cases a year, these are legitimate small-batch releases that are increasingly sought-after the world over.

Fine Wine Cellars

On the one hand, our role as a merchant of all things wine & spirits could not be simpler. We aim to source the most delicious, the most authentic, and the highest quality products possible from Australia and around the world in order to offer them to our clients. We live or die by how well we perform this task. Of course things are rarely as simple or as easy as they seem. Hunting for wines & spirits is no different. Apart from the months spent travelling, countless days and evenings spent tasting and the outrageous wine expenditure in the name of ‘research’, sourcing quality wine and spirits requires expertise and experience. Understanding the potential of a producer and their products is much more than just a slurp and a spit.
