As Claux gets to understand her vineyards in more detail, certain parcels are bound to stand out more than others. One such vineyard is home to a section of 70-year-old Carignan and an adjacent plot of 90-year-old Grenache – both on clay/limestone soils (close to the cellar). Brunnhilde Claux calls the wine from this site Roc du Suzadou, after one of Minervois highest peaks.

Fascinatingly, Claux told us that she had recently been told (by an old wine-growing family) that the rootstock, of these particular parcels are a grafted onto to a phylloxera resistant clone made from French vine species. I never knew such a rootstock existed, and neither, it turns out, do most of the French! Anyway, I’m told these relics yield much much lower than the American rootstocks and was mostly passed over in favour of the American native for a range of reasons. You learn something new every day. Back to the wine. Today, most Minervois producer’s top cuvee is based at least partly on Syrah. Not so here. The blend is roughly 50/50 Carignan and Grenache, and in another point of difference, it is the finest and most delicate wine in the line-up.

The nose is quite restrained with floral notes of jasmine, lavender, red fruits and some mixed citrus peel. After a while, you see more pine and blue fruits and a stony pungency. The palate is exceptionally fine, pure and poised – with cherry and anise complimenting the aforementioned characteristics.

You couldn’t hope for a better release. Such finesse and prettiness – it’s the kind of wine you could offer a Burgundy drinker (which is after all the greatest compliment we can give a wine!) A beautiful wine that is worth every penny.

Fine Wine Cellars

On the one hand, our role as a merchant of all things wine & spirits could not be simpler. We aim to source the most delicious, the most authentic, and the highest quality products possible from Australia and around the world in order to offer them to our clients. We live or die by how well we perform this task. Of course things are rarely as simple or as easy as they seem. Hunting for wines & spirits is no different. Apart from the months spent travelling, countless days and evenings spent tasting and the outrageous wine expenditure in the name of ‘research’, sourcing quality wine and spirits requires expertise and experience. Understanding the potential of a producer and their products is much more than just a slurp and a spit.
