The 2018 Clos des Lambrays is also outstanding in 2018 and I have to imagine that this was one of the first wines picked chez Taupenot in this vintage. The very complex nose delivers an aromatic constellation of dark berries, cassis, French roast, beautifully complex, savory elements, a gorgeous base of dark soil tones, a touch of mustard seed and a suave foundation of new oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very elegant for a 2018, with a fine core of fruit, superb length and grip and a lovely chassis of fine-grained tannins perking up the very complex finish. This is a first class example of the vintage. (11/2019)

Clos des Lambrays is in something of a transitional phase right now, with the departure of one winemaker and the arrival of another, so it will be interesting to see how the style evolves. This is a classically firm, ageworthy expression of the terroir, marked by its 80% whole bunches, which give it a stemmy, peaty, almost Islay malt whisky-like note, a tannic backbone and layers of dark black cherry and damson fruit. A slightly riper mix reflects notes of black cherry, cassis plum and plenty of spice and floral nuances, especially violet. On the palate there is good freshness and vivacity as the succulent and rounded middle weight plus flavors also possess a beguiling texture before culminating in a powerful, sappy, firm and somewhat raspy finish. Compared to the 2019 version, the tannins are not as fine nor is the balance quite as well dialed in but even so, there is still plenty of admire.  (1/2021)

The 2018 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru has an intriguing nose. There is just a touch of reduction at first and the whole bunch element is more conspicuous here compared to the nascent 2019. Touches of brown spice, clove and freshly rolled tobacco accompany the black fruit. The palate has quite a lactic entry, a smear of dark chocolate that feels incongruous. Yet there is good depth and grip and it feels quite saline towards the finish, long in the mouth, though not as complex as other Grand Crus from this vintage. That said, it should age with style.  (12/2020)

Deeply coloured. Perfumed and dark and rocky on the nose. A hint of pepper but the most elegant, restrained dark-red fruit. Just a touch of oak spice. Savoury spice not sweet spice. Incredibly tender tannins. They did three punchdowns a day but did not push down to the bottom of the tank. There’s power in the mid palate but it is delicate on the finish, such tannic finesse that you almost miss the power of the vintage. Darkness to the fruit shows the ripeness. Very very long and so elegant already. Oak eaten by the fruit. A definite mineral/pepper layer adds to the freshness. Mouth-watering even if the acidity is only moderate (pH 3.65). Well balanced at 13.7%. (JH) 18/20. (11/2019)

About Clos des Lambrays

Clos des Lambrays is an Appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for red wine in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, with Pinot noir as the main grape variety. It is situated in the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte-d’Or département, and is located immediately to the southwest of the village Morey-Saint-Denis. The Clos part of its name refers to a wall-enclosed vineyard. Clos des Lambrays was elevated from premier cru to grand cru status in 1981, which meant that it was created as a separate AOC.

Clos de Lambrays totals 8.84 hectares (21.8 acres) and most of it (8.66 hectares (21.4 acres)) is owned by the winery Domaine des Lambrays. However, Domaine Taupenot-Merme also has a small holding in this vineyard, so Domaine des Lambrays is unable to put a “Monopole” label on its bottles.
