What a juicy and animating light Mosel Kabinett with lime zest and mint character, plus good yellow and green apple fruit. Long, super-clean finish. And the total impression is of a wine that’s barely off-dry. Drink or hold. Screw cap. 92 points Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com

Bernkasteler Lay (pronounced LIE an old dialect word for ‘slate’) is situated around the Dr. Loosen estate house, directly along the Mosel, just outside the village of Bernkastel. As the name indicates, the soil is predominantly blue slate, but it is heavier and deeper than the soil in the neighbouring villages of Wehlen or Graach.

This site has a gentler slope than the estate’s other vineyards. It produces richly textured, assertive wines. 2019 Dr Loosen Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Kabinett comes from vines with an average age of 60 years old, grown on blue Devonian slate. It’s farmed sustainably, according to strict German environmental regulations. Cool fermentation in a combination of stainless steel tanks and Fuder barrels, half fermented with natural yeasts, half with cultured yeasts.

Dr Loosen Philosophy

Enjoying a great wine is a unique pleasure. A whole cosmos is reflected in its variety of flavors, from the change of seasons to the unmistakable terroir of a vineyard to the passion of the winemaker. All of the great winemakers I’ve met have a clear vision. They know how their wines should taste before the first grape is even picked. They always let individual terroir triumph over technology. And quality – perfectly ripened grapes – always comes before quantity. Great wines are the result of great passion and dedication to clear convictions that are uncompromisingly realized.

We feel these principles at our two wineries Dr. Loosen on the Moselle and Villa Wolf in the Palatinate. We want to produce wines that seduce you to enjoy, that are concentrated and complex and that unmistakably reflect their origins.

When I drink a wine from our Erste Große Lage Wehlener Sonnenuhr, I want to smell the blue slate that nourished the grapes and taste the fruit that is associated with this unique terroir. I would like to experience the special character of a vintage. This is what sets wine apart from any other drink.

Every great wine is created in the head. But it only proves its true greatness in your glass. I hope you drink our wine with the same pleasure that I make it.

Our ethos has always been to build a portfolio as you’d construct the perfect wine list. We work with small, family producers who express the best of their regions. The wines we sell are the wines we enjoy, and the people who make them are like family to us. They are wines that taste of where they come from, and though they’re steeped in history and stamped with the signature of their terroir, they’re more than ever relevant – and desirable – to the Australian diner of today.
