I have great memories of many years ago filling Tawny into used whiskey barrels imported in from the USA. As the Tawny went in, the wonderfully rich whiskey aromas filled the air and when revisiting these barrels some time later, the old Tawny inside showed the distinct flavours of the spirit that had originally been in those casks. Added to that were the typical, beautifully aged rancio Tawny characters you’d expect to taste.

Some years ago we decided to relive this memory by importing a number of used Bourbon barrels from Kentucky, USA, and filling these with a special Tawny. These barrels have made a home in our dusty fortified shed and are maturing gracefully.

Description

Dutschke Wines is a family-owned boutique producer of classic Barossa red wines and fortifieds.

Wayne Dutschke’s philosophy is to produce the best single vineyard red and fortified wines from the St. Jakobi Vineyard in Lyndoch. This unique patch of real estate in the Southern Barossa was purchased in the 1930’s by his grandfather, Oscar Semmler and now owned by Oscar’s son and Wayne’s uncle, Ken Semmler. Wayne also blends Shiraz from his neighbour’s vineyards along the 2km stretch of Gods Hill Road for the acclaimed Dutschke GHR Neighbours Shiraz.

About Wayne Dutschke

Wayne started making wine in 1979 in Australia as well as knocking out a few vintages in Spain and California. In 1990, Wayne formed his own brand called WillowBend producing a blend of Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet. Interest from the United States in 1998 brought about a name change to Dutschke Wines as well as a few new brands – GHR Neighbours Shiraz, St. Jakobi Shiraz and the reserve wine Oscar Semmler Shiraz.

Since their first crush in 1990, Dutschke Wines has strived to make wines of the highest quality that show Wayne’s expression of the characteristics of that precious patch of dirt from a precious corner of the Barossa Valley.
