” The 2018 Wiltinger Braune Kupp Spätlese (AP #5) offers a very clear, fine, ripe, floral-scented bouquet of weathered slate and bright, ripe fruits. Sweet yet fine and fresh on the palate, with crystalline and sharp acidity, this is a generous, mouth-filling but very fine and elegant Spätlese with lots of charm and finesse. The finish is very intense, long and salty and reveals a firm mineral structure and tension. Quite sweet. Tasted in June 2019.(SR) ” (8/2019) 92 points John Gilman

” The 2018 Braune Kupp Spätlese includes about twenty percent botrytis this year, according to Veronika Lintner, as the vineyard is down close to the river and prone to morning fogs. It is a very gentle touch of botrytis, as the wine is very pure and vibrant, offering up a nose of pear, white cherries, slate, bee pollen, a touch of wild yeasts and a lovely floral topnote of citrus blossoms. On the palate the wine is crisp, fullish and complex, with lovely detail and slate undertow, fine focus and excellent cut and grip on the bouncy finish. This is really good, and given that it was only bottled a couple of weeks ago, I may only be seeing part of the picture here! (Drink between 2023-2065) ” (4/2019)

“AP: 05 19. The 2018er Wiltinger braune Kupp Riesling Spätlese was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar (85 g/l). It proves quite restrained at first and only gradually reveals its intense and ripe nose of pineapple, mango, almond cream, papaya, plum, candied peach, and orange blossom. Bold and ripe flavors of pear, quince and apricot make for a very smooth and rich feel on the creamy palate. The wine proves intense and powerful in the long finish and leaves the impact of an Auslese in the after-taste. This opulent and quite baroque wine will need a solid decade (if not more) to integrate its sweetness and develop its refined side. 2028-2048.” (06/2019)

Egon Muller’s single vineyard holding is dominated by Riesling through a small patch is planted to other varieties and he consistently produces wines of incredible purity, line and detail from the slate soils of the famous vineyard. Egon Muller is the sole German member of the Primum Familiae Vini whose other members include Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Vega Sicilia, Torres, Pol Roger, Antinori and Hugel et Fils.

The Mosel Wine Region
The Mosel river snakes its way between dramatically steep, slatey slopes from just south of the ancient Roman city of Trier to Koblenz to the north, where it empties into the Rhine.

The valley is home to many of the world’s most famous Riesling vineyards. The wines are richly fragrant, pale to golden in colour and light-bodied with lively acidity. The slaty soil lends a distinctive taste to wines which range from fine and fruity to earthy or flinty, often with a hint of spritz.
