This wine is a tribute to the Perseverance of these remarkable old vines having made the voyage by sea as rootlings from France to Glenrowan back in the late 1800’s. Surviving the ravages of time they valiantly prevail today dry grown and exposed to natures elements truly reflecting a unique piece of Australian wine history.

Made as it would have been in the 1800’s, grapes are picked to flavour with an emphasis on retaining freshness in the fruit. Unfortunately there was no Perseverance made in 2018 as it didn’t reach the exceptionally high bar we set for any wine released from this vineyard under the Perseverance label.

The early part of the 2019 growing season was extremely, however the North East was hit by a freak rain event in December 2018 that dumped huge amounts of rain in a very short period. This gave the old vines a good drink prior to verasion, there were no heat waves for the rest of summer and optimum flavors occurred in the grapes around 14 baume. Yields were down with a meager 1.8T harvested from the 15 acres resulting in only 118 dozen of the 2019 Perseverance Old Vine Shiraz been produced.

As per the last release in 2017 this is a full bodied wine with a firmer tannin structure whilst still retaining its signature floral lifted perfume and elegance. As usual we expect this wine to have a long life ahead of it in bottle for those who wish to cellar.

These grapes are always the first into the winery so we have all the time in the world to fuss over them. Gently destemmed but not crushed to retain whole berries, the fruit was split into 2 open fermetors with the larger containing 20% whole bunches, 10% of the free run juice was extracted. This vineyard is interplanted with the white variety Ugni Blanc, we believe it made up approximately 1.5% of the grapes in 2019 and is co fermented with the Shiraz. It seems in the warmer years there is a smaller amount of Ugni Blanc in the mix.

Both ferments were kept cool and lightly hand plunged once daily as to not over extract tannin. Both ferments were gently basket pressed into one new and one 3 year old French oak puncheon after 21 days on skins. 18 months in oak on full lees to build texture. This release is more akin to the 2012 and 2017 releases than the 2016 and 2014 vintages. Amazing concentration, full bodied yet elegant and understated, structured, plush, silky and perfumed.

This wine showcases the beauty of dry land viticulture, truly expressing the weather conditions of the season it was grown. Unfined, vegan friendly, lightly filtered. Bottled in July 2020..

About Eldorado Road

Eldorado Road was established in 2010 and specializes in red varieties, growing Durif and Nero d’Avola at our Eldorado Road vineyard taking full advantage of Eldorado’s magnificent soils and terrior.

Eldorado is located in the Beechworth foothills equidistant between Beechworth & Wangaratta. The tiny home vineyards are located on Eldorado Road a few kms from the quaint hamlet of Eldorado. The property was selected & purchased principally because it’s located on a seam of free draining red decomposed granite loaded with granite buckshot, flanked by granite hills & fed by the gentle flowing Reedy Creek which weaves its way through the property on its journey to the Ovens River.

We also lease a local Shiraz vineyard planted way back in 1890s and still farmed without irrigation producing small quantities of amazing fruit. This particular vineyard and wine truly reflects a unique piece of Australian winemaking heritage.

Paul Dahlenburg (Bear) & Lauretta Schulz (Laurie) spent a career making wine & tending to the vineyards of others, although in 2010 Eldorado Road was born & they had their own label.

“Shout it from the rooftops – Eldorado Road, as a label, should be much more famous. The wines are too interesting, too keen, too complex to be ‘just another Victorian producer’. Andrew Graham, Australian Wine Review.
