Riserva wines are only made when a parcel is unanimously judged by us to be of exceptional quality, this is only the second Riserva since we released our first wines way back in 2010.

The 2019 Riserva Nero d’Avola comes from 2 separate ferments, both sourced from a section of our vineyard that consistently produces the best quality fruit. 66% of the blend was carefully handpicked at a baume of 13.4 on the 22nd of March. Once in the winery it was destemmed but not crushed, 20% of the free run juice was drained off and an extended 5 day cold soak undertaken. The must was then allowed to warm slowly at which point fermentation begun naturally. Hand plunged once daily during active ferment. The ferment reached dryness after 13 days, it was then locked down and remained on skins for another 10 days before gentle basket pressing to 1-3 year old French oak puncheons. Matured on gross lees for 16 months.

The second ferment was picked later on the 9th of April at a baume of 13.8. Half the grapes were destemed but not crushed, the other half remained as whole bunches. The grapes were then transferred to a specially made French oak puncheon fermentor with the whole bunches sandwiched in the middle. The fermentor was then gassed with CO2 and locked down.

Ferment started naturally after a couple of days. We handplunged it once daily and allowed it to ferment reasonably warm. Extended maceration of 21 days before gentle basket pressing. 16 months in our best seasoned French oak on gross lees. Unfined, Bottled July 2020.

About Eldorado Road

Eldorado Road was established in 2010 and specializes in red varieties, growing Durif and Nero d’Avola at our Eldorado Road vineyard taking full advantage of Eldorado’s magnificent soils and terrior.

Eldorado is located in the Beechworth foothills equidistant between Beechworth & Wangaratta. The tiny home vineyards are located on Eldorado Road a few kms from the quaint hamlet of Eldorado. The property was selected & purchased principally because it’s located on a seam of free draining red decomposed granite loaded with granite buckshot, flanked by granite hills & fed by the gentle flowing Reedy Creek which weaves its way through the property on its journey to the Ovens River.

We also lease a local Shiraz vineyard planted way back in 1890s and still farmed without irrigation producing small quantities of amazing fruit. This particular vineyard and wine truly reflects a unique piece of Australian winemaking heritage.

Paul Dahlenburg (Bear) & Lauretta Schulz (Laurie) spent a career making wine & tending to the vineyards of others, although in 2010 Eldorado Road was born & they had their own label.

“Shout it from the rooftops – Eldorado Road, as a label, should be much more famous. The wines are too interesting, too keen, too complex to be ‘just another Victorian producer’. Andrew Graham, Australian Wine Review.
