The 2023 Drinking Red is a delicious blend of Shiraz (70%), Pinot Noir (21%) and equal parts (4.5%) Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Shiraz and Cabernet are sourced from the organically managed Lecco Vineyard in Mount Barker―a site previously leased by Ryan and one he still consults to―while the Pinot, also from Mount Barker, hails from Crystal Brook Vineyard. The Malbec is sourced from the L’enclos du Tertre site in Frankland River.

Ryan picks the Syrah and Pinot Noir early to capture freshness and natural acidity and presses them immediately to tank for fermentation. This lightly coloured rosé-style wine was then steeped on the Malbec skins for a short period before all components were blended together. The wine then matured in tank before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Ryan O’Meara at Express Winemakers is making fun wines with a serious edge out of WA’s Great Southern region.

This red is a great case in point. The Drinking Wine is built for ultimate smashability, a wine to slug down during a casual luncheon or to rip the top off when unexpected friends drop by.

It’s made from Grenache, Mourvedre, Malbec and Syrah, all from organic farms across Margaret River and Great Southern.

This is the best version of this wine to date – juicy, crunchy and brimming with life.

It’s hard to imagine a red wine that is easier to drink.

About Express Winemakers

Express Winemakers is Ryan O’Meara’s pint-sized wine operation from the deep south of WA. From kicking off in 2011, Ryan has assembled a group of top-flight vineyards from around the Great Southern that supply him with top-flight fruit to make his fun and creative range of wines.

Express’s single-site wines are simply bottled personalities of the cool sub-regions of the Great Southern, but this winery also does all kinds of envelope-pushing, with creative blends and off-the charts experiments. Organic practices are upheld and all fruit is hand-picked and crushed by foot. Fermentation is natural and all wines are bottled unrefined and unfiltered.

There’s some serious value to be had in the Express range, from funky & skinsy whites, through spicy cool-climate reds and everything in between. Express Winemakers is a terrific example of the ever-rising tidal wave of young and adventurous WA producers reinventing the west!
