Lifted aromas of red and blackcurrant fruits on the nose with blood plums and violets and hints of spicy oak.

Crimson with ruby hue.

The palate is softly structured, fleshy palate displays a beautiful plushness. It has a generous core of black and red berry fruit, layers of spice, finishing with a gentle flow of long, lingering fine-grained chocolatey tannins.

The Australian Old Vine Collection Barossa Shiraz celebrates the Barossa’s magnificent old vine resources. The region is home to what is believed to be the world’s oldest Shiraz, Mataro and Grenache vines growing on their own roots. Some of these vines remarkably date back to the 1840s. This is in part due to South Australia having strong biosecurity measures which has prevented the movement of Phylloxera – a potentially devasting vine aphid, which killed off much of Europe’s grapevines in the 1800s.

The Barossa has done much work to protect these ancient treasures, including forming its own Old Vine Charter. In 2009, the Barossa Old Vine Charter was instituted to register vineyards by age, so that older vines could be preserved, retained and promoted.

The Australian Old Vine Collection Barossa Shiraz was sourced from original plantings at Light Pass, Angaston and Tanunda. Vine ages range from the late 1800s to the 1950s. The wine was vinified in small lot (0.5 – 1 tonne) open fermenters, with daily plunging or rack and return. It was matured for 24 months in new and matured French oak barrels.

94 Points James Halliday Wine Companion, 2021

Vintage Notes
A year of good rain and a growing season on the cool side gave us low stress conditions in various aspects. It certainly suited finer flavour development and led to elegance in Shiraz. Tannin structure and acid balance were optimal too.

About Gibson Wines

Gibson Wines was established in 1996 and draws on over 45 years of experience of its founder; viticulturist, geologist and winemaker, Rob Gibson.

Surrounding an 1850s Blacksmith’s cottage, Gibson’s home property in Light Pass – Northern Barossa – features a 7 – acre patch of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. These vines are planted under the Gibson-Schulz trellis system, a unique method co-invented by Rob. The vines are alternately planted on a low and high cordon wire, the latter reaching nearly two metres in height.

Alongside these estate vineyards, relationships forged by Rob over four decades with multi-generational Barossa grape growing families, provides Gibson with enviable access to some of the region’s most precious fruit. Crossing all compass points of the region, Gibson’s grower relationships are key. Not only in providing a multitude of complexity in the end wines, but as a means of supporting a sustainable, integrated wine growing community.
