Our Isabelle Cabernet Merlot is a tribute to Rob Gibson’s mother – a lady of warm heart, underlying strength and a touch of vibrant eccentricity.

This Bordeaux-inspired wine is an expression of varieties that are all grown on our home block, at the cold end of the Barossa in Light Pass – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a small percentage of Petit Verdot.

Our microclimate in the North-Eastern Barossa is well suited to these varieties, which typically perform better in cooler pockets. Two factors are at play here – we sit at a slightly higher elevation than the valley-floor, which moderates temperatures. We are also at the edge of the foothills of the Barossa’s ranges, where cool air runs down the hills and settles over the river flat terrain of Light Pass itself. This is evident in the many frost fans that are dotted throughout the region.

Our 2021 vintage of Isabelle Cabernet Merlot boasts lifted aromas of musk and black cherry with layers of spice. The palate shows great complexity and depth with flavours of black cherry, olive and bay-leaf, balanced with bright acidity leading to a long, powdery dry finish.

Vintage Notes

A mild dry season with good weather conditions through harvest & those with irrigation did well.

About Gibson Wines

Gibson Wines was established in 1996 and draws on over 45 years of experience of its founder; viticulturist, geologist and winemaker, Rob Gibson.

Surrounding an 1850s Blacksmith’s cottage, Gibson’s home property in Light Pass – Northern Barossa – features a 7 – acre patch of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. These vines are planted under the Gibson-Schulz trellis system, a unique method co-invented by Rob. The vines are alternately planted on a low and high cordon wire, the latter reaching nearly two metres in height.

Alongside these estate vineyards, relationships forged by Rob over four decades with multi-generational Barossa grape growing families, provides Gibson with enviable access to some of the region’s most precious fruit. Crossing all compass points of the region, Gibson’s grower relationships are key. Not only in providing a multitude of complexity in the end wines, but as a means of supporting a sustainable, integrated wine growing community.
