95 Points – Tyson Stelzer 2020

With a lineage stretching back more than twenty-five years Grosset Piccadilly Chardonnay has helped to establish the tiny Piccadilly Valley as one of the best places to grow chardonnay in Australia. The reputation of this wine has been, at least in part, built on its age-worthiness.

There’s an immediacy to the Grosset Chardonnay 2018 with bright, vibrant aromatics that are ripe yet restrained – nectarine, white peach and grapefruit. These characters give intensity and weight to the mid-palate with complexity added by hints of cashew and hazelnut. There’s finesse and balance before a crisp, zesty finish that lingers long and pure. Delicious now yet all signs are there that this will develop into an impressive, complex and mature chardonnay

Description

Grosset Wines is an independently owned winery producing eight highly regarded premium wines and one spirit, each vintage.

“We aim to produce the best examples of variety and place. This is self-explanatory really; riesling from the Clare Valley, expressing the dramatic differences between soft rock and hard rock sites and then differences within those broad categories; uniquely sited semillon and fiano, cabernet from the coolest site in the region and of course, chardonnay and pinot noir from an even cooler sub-region of the Adelaide Hills. Purity of fruit and optimum ripeness are crucial to us, and we are not afraid to use different wine making approaches to bring the best out of each vineyard. Each is a testament to this philosophy.” Jeffrey Grosset.

Jeffrey Grosset, owner and founder was voted the inaugural Australian Winemaker of the Year by Gourmet Traveller Wine in 1998 and is internationally recognised as one of the ‘Top 10 White Winemakers’ (Decanter, UK) and one of the ’50 Most Influential Winemakers’ (Wine & Spirit, USA) in the world today.
