Ripe Cabernet aromas from the outset. A full-bodied and chocolate-rich palate, fleshy and grapey as well. There’s a blueberry and licorice pop to the mid palate as the wine opens with a little time in a decanter. Will gather more interest in its expression over the next 5 years.

Tasting Notes
The 2016 vintage of Directors’ Cut Cabernet Sauvignon gives a very clear understanding of the power and finesse of Langhorne Creek. Here the fruit of old vines are showcased by Ben Glaetzer’s refined winemaking and matured in the finest oak to bring the intensity of the Cabernet Sauvignon to the forefront. Look for delicate floral and herbal notes to act as a counterpoint to the raw majesty of the fruit.

Vinification
Only the finest Cabernet vineyards in Langhorne Creek contributed to Directors’ Cut. The old vine fruit is the cornerstone of this wine’s character. The fruit was harvested at night to retain freshness. Initial skin contact was followed by 7 days of cool fermentation with our Rhône isolate yeast and hand-plunging three times daily. Maturation then occurred in 75% new oak hogsheads for approximately 14 months.

Vintage
Ben reckons this might be the finest vintage he has ever seen from Langhorne Creek. Only time will tell. Harvest was more generous than the previous few years, with above average quantity and quality. Total degree days were up from the last three years, with wonderful ripeness levels recorded leading to amazing fruit intensity. This may supersede the 2012 vintage for overall quality and has led to a very happy winemaker.

About Heartland Wines

The Heartland story began in the late 1990’s when winemaker Ben Glaetzer became excited about the outstanding quality of fruit being grown in some of South Australia’s lesser-known regions, in particular Langhorne Creek.

Together with industry veterans, Scott Collett, Grant Tilbrook and more recently Nick Keukenmeester, they grew Heartland into an award-winning winery.

“A really important point I want to get across is we’re not a group of investors that have got together and poured cash into it for the sake of doing it. We are at the coalface of it.”

Today Heartland sources all of its fruit exclusively from Langhorne Creek and makes only red wines.

Heartland is the essence of Australia’s Langhorne Creek, a region that typifies Australian texture, balance and spice at its finest. Heartland grows and selects grapes with the most flavour per acre through careful vineyard management and years of collective expertise.

The brilliant Ben Glaetzer gives focus and expression to these flavours in the winery. Heartland is the place between the vines that offers the best view of the gum trees.
