This is a Riesling to savour, vibrant nose of citrus; limes and cumquat, and maybe a hint of apple. On the palate it is mouth-watering and generously mouth-filling at the same time, with a roundness of acid. Alsacian in style, sophisticated but approachable.

“Riesling is the most complex and noble of white wines, demanding intellectual engagement. It flourishes in our cold climate and high iron basalt soils.” John Nagorcka – Hochkirch

Lime juice and blossom, honeysuckle and lemongrass. Piercing finish. James Halliday – 91 pts – winecompanion.com.au

About Hochkirch Wines, Tarrington, Victoria

Situated about 3.5 hours drive West of Melbourne, at the foothills of the Grampians is the town of Tarrington, formerly known by the name given to it by its German settlers, Hochkirch. A mere 70km north of the cold Southern coast of Western Victoria this Western neck of the Henty sees gently undulating hills, cold breezes and the perfect conditions for cool climate farming.

John & Jennifer Nagorcka’s family vineyard (20 acres) is part of a larger integrated Demeter certified mixed Biodynamic farm of 700 acres. The vineyard is close planted at 5,000-6000 vines/Ha on a North facing slope, 250m above sea level near Tarrington in southwest Victoria.

Jennifer and John Nagorcka began the development of Hochkirch in 1990 with a small planting using conventional Australian viticultural practices and varietal selection. The approach subsequently used was radically modified in response to the very cool climate with growing season temperatures similar to Burgundy.

The biodynamic method of agriculture as developed by Alex Podolinsky has been used here for over 20 years to produce wines of elegance and balance, detailed in their expression of our unique terroir with vivid fruit and distinctive ripe lively acidity.

Fine Wine Cellars

On the one hand, our role as a merchant of all things wine & spirits could not be simpler. We aim to source the most delicious, the most authentic, and the highest quality products possible from Australia and around the world in order to offer them to our clients. We live or die by how well we perform this task. Of course things are rarely as simple or as easy as they seem. Hunting for wines & spirits is no different. Apart from the months spent travelling, countless days and evenings spent tasting and the outrageous wine expenditure in the name of ‘research’, sourcing quality wine and spirits requires expertise and experience. Understanding the potential of a producer and their products is much more than just a slurp and a spit.
