Diam. Rully’s Les Cloux vineyard is located just south of the village, with south-easterly exposure on the sirloin cut of Rully 1er Cru overlooking the plain of Saône. Les Cloux is home to Defaix’s oldest vines, which were planted in 1944 on the classic clay/limestone mix found across the best sites in Burgundy. Since 2009 these old vines have been managed organically and are currently in their third year of Ecocert certification. Within Rully, Les Cloux is a site known for its ability to balance elegant and mouth-watering flesh with tangy grip and fine length–and in 2018 you can take that to the bank.

This 1er Cru was whole-bunch pressed, wild-fermented and aged in older barrels (up to seven years old) for 18 months before bottling. Aromas of almond, orange/lemon oil and orchard fruits waft from the glass, melding with perfectly judged, classy oak. The palate is mineral-inflected and gently textured, with both attributes growing in intensity as the wine takes on air. What we love about this release is the level of tension and grip Defaix has found to balance the ripeness of the year. The low-managed yields lend calibrated acidity, elegant shape and length to a great value white Burgundy, that will provide enormous drinking pleasure from day one.

“Outstanding. A smoky broad-ranging nose is comprised by notes of mineral reduction, spiced apple, lemon zest and a hint of herbal tea, all of which is trimmed in relatively generous wood. The sleek and nicely detailed medium weight flavors possess more refinement on the citrusy and slightly firmer finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. I very much like the texture, and this is altogether lovely – worth checking out.” 92 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound

About Rully Domaine

A two-hour drive south from the Bernard Defaix Chablis Domaine (why not take the scenic route through the Morvan Nature Park and over the Hautes-Côtes?) lies the Côte Chalonnaise and within it, the family’s small organic Rully Domaine. This Estate was inherited via Hélène Defaix (nee Jaeger) to become Domaine Jaeger-Defaix, the second Estate run by these focused and quality-driven growers. The connection to the land here is strong and longstanding—Hélène’s great-grandfather, Henri Niepce, was instrumental in achieving and promoting Rully’s AOC status in the 1930s.

Under five hectares, the Domaine is managed organically and has built a strong reputation for its cool, refreshing Chardonnay and its sweetly scented, pulpy Pinot Noir—wines which cost conspicuously less than those of similar quality from the Côte d’Or. Given the family connection, it won’t surprise you to hear that this small Domaine is run in the same earth-to-glass spirit as the Defaix family estate up north. Rully might not have anything like the same kind of following in Australia as the Côte d’Or, but for those seeking the elusive Burgundy that’s still superbly priced, look no further.

Fine Wine Cellars

On the one hand, our role as a merchant of all things wine & spirits could not be simpler. We aim to source the most delicious, the most authentic, and the highest quality products possible from Australia and around the world in order to offer them to our clients. We live or die by how well we perform this task. Of course things are rarely as simple or as easy as they seem. Hunting for wines & spirits is no different. Apart from the months spent travelling, countless days and evenings spent tasting and the outrageous wine expenditure in the name of ‘research’, sourcing quality wine and spirits requires expertise and experience. Understanding the potential of a producer and their products is much more than just a slurp and a spit.
