Jaeger-Defaix’s newest red cuvée (100% Pinot Noir) comes from a small parcel of Rully villages purchased in 2011. Sited in the Vorot lieu-dit, the 30-year-old vines here have been farmed organically for decades. This is a well-sited parcel that yields small bunches of grapes with thick skins and concentrated juice. The fruit this year was fermented with 20% whole bunches, and the wine was aged in seasoned oak barrels (from one to three years) for 15 months.

Didier Defaix describes his 2019s as having “the frame of the 2017s and the pleasant [fruity] style of the 2018s”. What Mr Defaix is underselling in this case is an enchantingly slinky Rully. It’s laden with seamlessly rendered red fruit, bramble and undergrowth flavours, bright acidity and gentle, feathery tannins. It’s ready to charm, although has the stuffing to develop more complexity over the coming years.

“A ripe and somewhat fruity nose combines notes of red and dark raspberry with those of earth and a hint of the sauvage. There is an appealing underlying tension to the firm and relatively powerful flavors that flash a touch of rusticity on the sneaky long finish. This should reward a few years of cellaring if desired.” 87-89 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound

About Rully Domaine

A two-hour drive south from the Bernard Defaix Chablis Domaine (why not take the scenic route through the Morvan Nature Park and over the Hautes-Côtes?) lies the Côte Chalonnaise and within it, the family’s small organic Rully Domaine. This Estate was inherited via Hélène Defaix (nee Jaeger) to become Domaine Jaeger-Defaix, the second Estate run by these focused and quality-driven growers. The connection to the land here is strong and longstanding—Hélène’s great-grandfather, Henri Niepce, was instrumental in achieving and promoting Rully’s AOC status in the 1930s.

Under five hectares, the Domaine is managed organically and has built a strong reputation for its cool, refreshing Chardonnay and its sweetly scented, pulpy Pinot Noir—wines which cost conspicuously less than those of similar quality from the Côte d’Or. Given the family connection, it won’t surprise you to hear that this small Domaine is run in the same earth-to-glass spirit as the Defaix family estate up north. Rully might not have anything like the same kind of following in Australia as the Côte d’Or, but for those seeking the elusive Burgundy that’s still superbly priced, look no further.

Fine Wine Cellars

On the one hand, our role as a merchant of all things wine & spirits could not be simpler. We aim to source the most delicious, the most authentic, and the highest quality products possible from Australia and around the world in order to offer them to our clients. We live or die by how well we perform this task. Of course things are rarely as simple or as easy as they seem. Hunting for wines & spirits is no different. Apart from the months spent travelling, countless days and evenings spent tasting and the outrageous wine expenditure in the name of ‘research’, sourcing quality wine and spirits requires expertise and experience. Understanding the potential of a producer and their products is much more than just a slurp and a spit.
