96 Points Special Value, Halliday Wine Companion

‘Inaugural release. 100% Gingin clone from Karridale (south). No mlf, matured for 10 months in French oak (40% new). In general, 2019 was a cool and wet year in Margaret River. The resulting wines are highly aromatic, finely detailed and nuanced. This wine is the product of the powerful Gingin clone, grown in a cool area in a cool year. This, in combination with blocked mlf, lends a fierceness to the acidity, however the fruit stands up to it: guava, white peach, toasted almonds, brine and pink grapefruit. Outstanding.’ Drink by 2036 Special Value Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion 2022 > Rating: 96 / 100

96 Points, Ray Jordan

“This is part of a new Juniper range with the fruit sourced from Karridale at the Higher Plane vineyard further to the south of Margaret River town. The 100% Gingin clone was handpicked in small batches and then whole bunch pressed to barrel for wild fermentation. It then had 10 months on lees but there was no malolactic fermentation with the aim of preserving the bright, crunchy crispness of the fruit. This cooler subregion has such an impact resulting in wines of finesse and textural feel that is so distinctive. There’s a creamy chalky mix on the nose here with subtle cereal and grapefruit nuances leading to a lovely dry savoury finish. A classy wine that captures what this vineyard and subregion are all about. Drink: 2021 – 2028.” 96 points, Ray Jordan, The West Australian, Mar21 > Rating: 96 / 100

About Juniper Estate

Juniper is a producer of premium wines in Margaret River, the heart of the remote, environmentally pristine winegrowing area lying in the south-west corner of Western Australia, 270km south of Perth. We are fortunate that Margaret River is where it is and, with its maritime influence, ancient soils and beautiful landscape is perfectly suited to the production of great wines.

The Juniper ‘Estate’ vineyard (formerly Wright’s) was planted in 1973 and, together with Vasse Felix, Cape Mentelle, Cullen, Moss Wood and Woodlands, is one of the founding vineyards of the region.

Juniper was established in 1998 by the late Roger Hill and his wife, Gillian Anderson, with the intention of producing wines which rank among the best to come from Margaret River and beyond.

Since 2017 Gillian and Roger’s sons, Nick and Tom, have run the business with the same ambition to make great wines from our own vineyards.

Juniper’s outlook combines the tenets of heritage, authenticity and original thinking with a view to producing wines of elegance and sophistication that showcase the best of the Margaret River region. We grow what we make and make what we grow, all from our distinctive vineyards in Wilyabrup and Karridale.

The sites are exciting in their differences, but their farming is united by sustainable and organic practices resulting in the best fruit possible that reflects each vineyard’s idiosyncrasies. Applications of compost from spent marc, sheep manure and the use of inter-row crops to fix nitrogen are all small examples of how we help sustain the natural balance of our land.

The wines we make reflect a combination of their place, vintage and variety, and are expressions of our passion, to be shared and enjoyed in good company.

A deep respect for the history of the region, and the pursuit to push boundaries, drives our outlook in creating wines that reflect their time and place. This begins with careful and thorough manual intervention in the vineyard and attentive yet minimal intervention in the winery.

Important to our philosophy is retention of the individuality of each parcel of fruit, with a block-by-block approach to their winemaking. This enables us control in blending, using complementary parcels to preserve the uniqueness and personality of our distinctive Margaret River sites. Oak maturation is used to enhance complexity and contribute to the refinement of the wines.
