Ruby red in colour. The nose is lifted & aromatic with typical cherry, complemented by raspberry notes with tomato leaf, oregano & a dusting of spice. Medium-bodied in weight, smooth and engaging with appealing berry fruit flavours, contrasting beautifully with the lingering savoury & spicy elements. Balanced acidity & fine ripe tannins complete the picture. Recommended with Spanish style meatballs, or grain & roasted red capsicum salad.

2019 was cooler & later than recent vintages but with no extremes of heat. The red varieties enjoyed long hang time to achieve optimum ripeness, but rain in February/March required bunch dropping & selective harvesting. Yields were lower but quality was ensured.

Five different clones of Tempranillo were hand-picked in two passes on 9th & 23rd March 2019 at 12.6° to 13.6° Bé from our Karridale property, which is sustainably farmed following organic principles.

Reviews
91 Points, Halliday Wine Companion 2022
‘Shortcrust pastry, raspberry, violets and pink peppercorn. The tannins are fine and furry, shaping the boisterous fruit and keeping everything in line. There is no hint of the cooler vintage from whence this came, save for the fine thread of saline acidity that is woven through the middle palate and finish.’ Drink by 2031 Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion 2022 Read Less

About Juniper Estate

Juniper is a producer of premium wines in Margaret River, the heart of the remote, environmentally pristine winegrowing area lying in the south-west corner of Western Australia, 270km south of Perth. We are fortunate that Margaret River is where it is and, with its maritime influence, ancient soils and beautiful landscape is perfectly suited to the production of great wines.

The Juniper ‘Estate’ vineyard (formerly Wright’s) was planted in 1973 and, together with Vasse Felix, Cape Mentelle, Cullen, Moss Wood and Woodlands, is one of the founding vineyards of the region.

Juniper was established in 1998 by the late Roger Hill and his wife, Gillian Anderson, with the intention of producing wines which rank among the best to come from Margaret River and beyond.

Since 2017 Gillian and Roger’s sons, Nick and Tom, have run the business with the same ambition to make great wines from our own vineyards.

Juniper’s outlook combines the tenets of heritage, authenticity and original thinking with a view to producing wines of elegance and sophistication that showcase the best of the Margaret River region. We grow what we make and make what we grow, all from our distinctive vineyards in Wilyabrup and Karridale.

The sites are exciting in their differences, but their farming is united by sustainable and organic practices resulting in the best fruit possible that reflects each vineyard’s idiosyncrasies. Applications of compost from spent marc, sheep manure and the use of inter-row crops to fix nitrogen are all small examples of how we help sustain the natural balance of our land.

The wines we make reflect a combination of their place, vintage and variety, and are expressions of our passion, to be shared and enjoyed in good company.

A deep respect for the history of the region, and the pursuit to push boundaries, drives our outlook in creating wines that reflect their time and place. This begins with careful and thorough manual intervention in the vineyard and attentive yet minimal intervention in the winery.

Important to our philosophy is retention of the individuality of each parcel of fruit, with a block-by-block approach to their winemaking. This enables us control in blending, using complementary parcels to preserve the uniqueness and personality of our distinctive Margaret River sites. Oak maturation is used to enhance complexity and contribute to the refinement of the wines.
