Luminous deep red in colour. A beguiling combination of black cherries, damsons, smallgoods, & dried herbs on the nose. Medium-bodied, with intense, ripe, dark-skinned fruits, aniseed & white pepper along with other savoury spice notes. Oak influence is subtle, but acidity & fine soft tannins carry the fruit on an impressively long finish. Excellent with Osso bucco!

2019 was cooler & later than recent vintages but with no extremes of heat. Red varieties enjoyed beautiful weather up until the end of April, allowing long hang-time to achieve optimum ripeness. However, bird pressure was high & yields were lower than average, but quality was consistent & the reds show great finesse.

95.8% was hand-picked at 13.9°-14.4°Bé between 4-11th April from the unirrigated 1973 plantings on the original estate. 4.2% is the aromatic PT15 clone picked on our Karridale vineyard on 3rd April at 13.3°Bé. Both sites are farmed sustainably, following organic practices.

REVIEWS

94 Points, James Suckling.com
‘Intense aromas of blackberries, sweet tobacco, cracked pepper and violets. Medium-to full-bodied with firm tannins that are long and intense. Yet, there’s polish and focus to the wine. Finesse, too. So drinkable now, but will improve age.’ Weekly Tasting Report 5th-11th October 2021, James Suckling.com Read Less

93 Points, Halliday Wine Companion 2022
‘Blackberry, charcuterie, spiced plum and licorice. On the palate this is taut and fresh, with fine layers of silty tannins. Good length of flavour rounds out this spicy, savoury wine. Very elegant.’ Drink by 2028 Erin Larking, Halliday’s Wine Companion 2022

About Juniper Estate

Juniper is a producer of premium wines in Margaret River, the heart of the remote, environmentally pristine winegrowing area lying in the south-west corner of Western Australia, 270km south of Perth. We are fortunate that Margaret River is where it is and, with its maritime influence, ancient soils and beautiful landscape is perfectly suited to the production of great wines.

The Juniper ‘Estate’ vineyard (formerly Wright’s) was planted in 1973 and, together with Vasse Felix, Cape Mentelle, Cullen, Moss Wood and Woodlands, is one of the founding vineyards of the region.

Juniper was established in 1998 by the late Roger Hill and his wife, Gillian Anderson, with the intention of producing wines which rank among the best to come from Margaret River and beyond.

Since 2017 Gillian and Roger’s sons, Nick and Tom, have run the business with the same ambition to make great wines from our own vineyards.

Juniper’s outlook combines the tenets of heritage, authenticity and original thinking with a view to producing wines of elegance and sophistication that showcase the best of the Margaret River region. We grow what we make and make what we grow, all from our distinctive vineyards in Wilyabrup and Karridale.

The sites are exciting in their differences, but their farming is united by sustainable and organic practices resulting in the best fruit possible that reflects each vineyard’s idiosyncrasies. Applications of compost from spent marc, sheep manure and the use of inter-row crops to fix nitrogen are all small examples of how we help sustain the natural balance of our land.

The wines we make reflect a combination of their place, vintage and variety, and are expressions of our passion, to be shared and enjoyed in good company.

A deep respect for the history of the region, and the pursuit to push boundaries, drives our outlook in creating wines that reflect their time and place. This begins with careful and thorough manual intervention in the vineyard and attentive yet minimal intervention in the winery.

Important to our philosophy is retention of the individuality of each parcel of fruit, with a block-by-block approach to their winemaking. This enables us control in blending, using complementary parcels to preserve the uniqueness and personality of our distinctive Margaret River sites. Oak maturation is used to enhance complexity and contribute to the refinement of the wines.
