Shiraz is the big player in the Clare Valley – the most planted grape variety, favoured for its richness and savoured for its vitality.

Acclaimed as one of the region’s great red wines, it can offer a spectrum of styles from bold and powerful, through lively and expressive, to deep and meaningful. One thing’s for certain – it’s never short of local personality.

Our place

Koonowla is one of the Clare Valley’s thriving treasures, an extraordinary homestead and estate with sweeping grounds, a historic gravity fed winery under refurbishment, and significant vineyard pedigree going back to the 1890s.

It is an outstanding showcase for the region’s southern gateway district of Auburn, with cellar door and function venue attractions supporting our exciting portfolio of contemporary wines.

Our Shiraz

We source superb, sustainably grown shiraz grapes from our own three vineyards that bridge the length of the Clare Valley, one in the revered Armagh district highly prized for its deeper, darker fruit characters while the other two surrounding Auburn offer a brighter red berry note.

This blending of multiple vineyard parcels provides a complex and delicious style of shiraz unique to the Koonowla estate. In the winery we honour traditional techniques and define with detailed attention each small batch, patiently matured in French oak barrels until a distinctive balance is reached.

You want a red with extras – a dash of Clare’s special charm? Taste our shiraz and you’ll discover it sip, after sip after sip.

About Koonowla – Clare Valley

Koonowla is one of the Clare Valley’s most iconic and picturesque properties with beautiful historic stone buildings and rolling broad acre hills. Located just east of Auburn in the Clare Valley of South Australia, the property was first planted with vines in the 1890s. By the early 1900’s Koonowla was producing from its own winery and cellars 250,000 litres of wine annually before a disastrous fire in 1926 burnt the winery and reduced the vineyard size, and with changing times saw land use convert mostly to grain and wool production.

In 1985 a vineyard replanting program was started and by 2001 plantings had grown to 240 acres. Rationalization some years later saw Koonowla’s vineyard area reduce to 120 acres. Today the Koonowla vineyard comprises blocks of meticulously selected terroir most suited to producing the highest quality classic Clare Valley varietals of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Riesling, as well as a small block of both Merlot and Semillon. Koonowla is a leader in the field of high-quality sustainable viticulture.
