Talc and bath powder elevated by freshly squeezed lime. Delicate minerality is beautifully balanced by crisp natural acidity.

96 points (gold) – Halliday Wine Companion
“Machine-harvested at night, destemmed and crushed, gently pressed for free-run. There’s a sorbet-like energy and bounce to the wine, the crunchy electricity of the fruit on the palate exhilarating, driving the long finish.” – James Halliday

Despite growing these vines organically since their planting in the 1970s, 2010 marked the first year of NASAA Organic Certification for these vineyards. Martin and Joan Smith and Molloy’s vineyards are virtually next to each other in Polish Hill River, and consistently produce top quality fruit which highlights the excellence of this sub-region of the Clare Valley.

Grey loam acid soils over sandstone and slate make up the profile with much of the top soil littered with rock, proving just how tough the vines need to be to sustain growth and produce quality fruit. It is the slate of Polish Hill River, as opposed to the limestone of Watervale, that gives rise to the point of difference between these styles.

About O’Leary Walker

Established in 2000 by winemakers David O’Leary and Nick Walker, O’Leary Walker Wines crafts exceptional small batch, vegan-friendly wine for you to enjoy today and for years to come.

With 40 years of experience and established reputations making wine with some of Australia’s most prestigious companies, long-time friends David and Nick decided to take control of their own destiny and produce small batches of carefully handcrafted wine from some of the best vineyard sites in South Australia. With a great leap of faith, they are now doing exactly what they set out to do.

2010 saw the opening of O’Leary Walker Winery and Cellar Door at Leasingham in the Clare Valley, South Australia, with Head Chef Brendan Leslie at the helm. This space overlooks picturesque Watervale vineyards, the region from which most of our signature wines are produced – particularly our award-winning Rieslings, recently recognised in James Halliday’s Top 100 Wines of 2022.

We also craft a select number of cool climate wines with fruit sourced from the Adelaide Hills, many from the O’Leary family vineyards in Balhannah and Oakbank. These include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and our famous ‘Hurtle’ Sparkling. We look to consistently celebrate the best of South Australia’s grape-growing regions, making the conscious decision to draw on fruit varieties that excel in these varied viticultural climates.

O’Leary Walker Wines celebrated its 21st year in 2021, with an established reputation for producing award-winning regional wines which combine uncompromising quality with personality – and we can’t wait for what the future holds.
