Penny’s Hill ‘the Experiment’ Grenache Mclaren Vale 2019 (6 Bottles)

AUSTRALIA WIDE SHIPPING INCLUDED

A wine of exceptional flavour, character and elegance. Penny’s Hill Grenache; an experiment of old vine stocks planted to a modern trellis configuration, intensely planted to reduce vigour and increase concentration.

Vineyard
Careful canopy management of an exclusive 1.9 acre site on shallow soils, results in low yields of highly concentrated fruit. With two vines per panel, planted almost together and crossed deliberately at the first wire, vigour is contained and concentration enhanced. Sourced from ancient, pre-clonal Grenache reared to the north of the Vales, the plot is almost dry grown.

Winemaking
Fruit was hand picked and open fermented using 20% whole bunches. Gentle hand plunging and 14 days on skins ensured optimum balance between flavour and tannin extraction was achieved and wine was pressed off skins and matured in old French puncheons for 11 months. Barrels remained on lees with regular topping to encourage texture and complexity and to preserve and respect the delicate nature of this parcel.

The Wine
The wine shows dark cherry and berry fruits coupled with anise, spice and floral notes. The palate is both flavoursome and seductive stating fruit purity and elegance. Fine tannins provide structure and balance leading to a wine of exceptional length and generosity.

Cellaring: Drink now or cellar up to 10 years.

About Penny’s Hill

In 1988 Tony and Susie Parkinson acquired land on the rolling foothills east of McLaren Vale. The 32 ha (80 acre) grazing property, a prized piedmont position with commanding views over the waters of Gulf St.Vincent, promised all the elements for a great vineyard.

Named Penny’s Hill Vineyard after the hill at the base of which it is sited, the property was planted to vines in 1991 to a unique narrow-row configuration to maximise vineyard productivity and grape and wine quality.

Further vineyard acquisition followed. In 1993, the newly-planted Malpas Road property was purchased, followed in 1996 by an adjacent highly prized hay-producing paddock that was planted to vines and named Goss Corner.

In 1998, the original Goss family homestead, ‘Ingleburne’ was added to the Malpas and Goss properties to reconnect what had originally been one entire holding.

Now many years on, Tony Parkinson maintains ownership and management of the business with a dedicated team which includes younger son, James who is learning the vineyard ropes and elder son David, a filmmaker who contributes much to the aesthetic of the enterprise.
