Identical vinification to its Block 11 sibling, except new oak is 30% (not 50%). It is clear and bright, the major difference – of course – is the terroir of each block. This is a juicy, pretty wine. 93 points. James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2021

Tim Shand, Winemaker Notes

2018 marked the 31st year in the ground for Block 3, and the fifth straight year making a single-block Punt Road Cabernet Sauvignon wine from the site. Block 3 is a savoury and structured site, and shows robust tannin in warm years – which 2018 was.

In many ways 2018 was the perfect year for Cabernet to ripen in the Yarra: the heat came early (before veraison) and the dry, mild conditions stretched well in May. Crops were lower in Cabernet than the other varieties. Crop set was even, and there were no berries dragging the chain at the end of the ripening season.

No surprises in the making of the wine, which has remained largely unchanged for the five straight vintages of single-block release. We did a long cold soak (four days) followed by a cool ferment (22-26 degrees). Time on skins post ferment was a bit longer than usual due to the ripe tannins: four days. The wine was pressed to tank, then racked to barrel at dryness. There was a slight change up here; although we still used all barriques (25% new), we added a few new Nadalie barrels to the Taransauds we usually use. Nadalie has a more pronounced, meaty tannin as well as a more significant char element.

The wine was racked at the end of winter ’18, then again in January ’19. Then it was finally racked to bottling in July ’19.
As always, there’s small amounts of Petit Verdot and Merlot added at the death to round out the wine. No finings, minimal filtration.

About Punt Road Wines, Yarra Valley

Everything we do comes from our home in Coldstream…ideas are born here, the grapes are grown here, and our wines are crafted and shared here. As a family owned vineyard and winery, we aim to create wines that reflect the heritage of our site, and the independent, creative energy of the Yarra Valley. Winemaker Tim Shand guides the path of fruit from more than 150 acres of estate-grown vineyards.

Our Range….
Winemaker Tim Shand selects fruit from over 150 acres of estate-grown vineyards on our 300 acre farm. We’ve planted several varieties over the past 27 years to best suit this site including Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Gamay Noir, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. These varieties shine in different ways across these two distinctive expressions.

Our Philosophy…
“We only produce wines from our own vineyard in Coldstream, a deliberate, and to us, significant decision. It gives us the opportunity to put all our focus on our one patch of dirt and provides us with a greater understanding of our site along with 13 vintages of cellar memory to draw on.”  Tim Shand, Head Winemaker

Winemaking Technique…
Using minimalist intervention winemaking techniques allows us to deliver wines of outstanding quality, highlighting season variations.

CellarHand is a fine-wine importer and wholesale distributor, with a portfolio featuring some of the most sought-after estates of Germany, Austria, France and Italy, as well some of the greatest producers from Australia and New Zealand. Our ethos has always been to build a portfolio as you’d construct the perfect wine list. We work with small, family producers who express the best of their regions. The wines we sell are the wines we enjoy, and the people who make them are like family to us. They are wines that taste of where they come from, and though they’re steeped in history and stamped with the signature of their terroir, they’re more than ever relevant – and desirable – to the Australian diner of today.
