The wine is purely off the old blocks of the Napoleone vineyard, planted between 1987 and 2001 using the I10V1 clone. So much flavour this year, a top tier Yarra Valley chardonnay vintage. Fruit harvested from Napoleone Blocks 2 and 11A both of which have grey loam on clay base and are South-East facing. The fruit was crushed to the press to maximise flavour and solids. Rough racked to puncheons (20% new) for natural ferment with all the solids. 40% of the wine went through malolactic fermentation. Lees stirred monthly. Bottled in November 2018.

“Notes of lime curd and stonefruit. On the palate, nougat, pineapple and ripe peach combine to make an elegant harmonious wine.” Tim Shand, Winemaker

Lemon curd and white peach, some nutty biscuits and creamy nougat, but also quite fresh and frisky. It has a subtle glossiness and glycerol texture, a bit of grapefruity and pineapple acidity, and a slight chalkiness. A pleasing amount of flavour delivered with confident restraint. Very nice.

About Punt Road Wines, Yarra Valley

Everything we do comes from our home in Coldstream…ideas are born here, the grapes are grown here, and our wines are crafted and shared here. As a family owned vineyard and winery, we aim to create wines that reflect the heritage of our site, and the independent, creative energy of the Yarra Valley. Winemaker Tim Shand guides the path of fruit from more than 150 acres of estate-grown vineyards.

Our Range….
Winemaker Tim Shand selects fruit from over 150 acres of estate-grown vineyards on our 300 acre farm. We’ve planted several varieties over the past 27 years to best suit this site including Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Gamay Noir, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. These varieties shine in different ways across these two distinctive expressions.

Our Philosophy…
“We only produce wines from our own vineyard in Coldstream, a deliberate, and to us, significant decision. It gives us the opportunity to put all our focus on our one patch of dirt and provides us with a greater understanding of our site along with 13 vintages of cellar memory to draw on.”  Tim Shand, Head Winemaker

Winemaking Technique…
Using minimalist intervention winemaking techniques allows us to deliver wines of outstanding quality, highlighting season variations.

Our ethos has always been to build a portfolio as you’d construct the perfect wine list. We work with small, family producers who express the best of their regions. The wines we sell are the wines we enjoy, and the people who make them are like family to us. They are wines that taste of where they come from, and though they’re steeped in history and stamped with the signature of their terroir, they’re more than ever relevant – and desirable – to the Australian diner of today.
