2019 Punt Road Shiraz comes from a very promising vintage – a season that may prove to be one of the best in the Yarra Valley in recent memory.

Plentiful frosty nights and heavy rains in winter delayed budburst, and spring continued in this mild (and wet) fashion. We had excellent canopies with slowly developing bunches. The mild conditions persisted into January and February. Warm, sunny days with crisp nights and mornings. Perfect for slow ripening, delicate flavours and acid retention. There was no disease threat from rain, and we harvested at leisure.

Single-site Shiraz from the Napoleone Vineyard’s Block 5 (70%) and Block 8 (30%). The vineyard has a southeasterly aspect and soils of alluvial loam on a clay base. The must was fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in French oak puncheons (10% new) from the Mercurey, Dargaud and Jaegle cooperages.

Shiraz is the variety that flies under the radar in the Yarra Valley, whose cool climate is ideally suited to bringing out the fragrance and spice of this variety in a crunchy, vivacious style. Tim Shand and the Punt Road team are renowned for turning on the excitement at an everyday price point, and that’s precisely what they do with this juicy, spiced cherry-drenched charmer.

Winemaker Tim Shand selects fruit from over 150 acres of estate-grown vineyards on our 300 acre farm. We’ve planted several varieties over the past 27 years to best suit this site including Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Gamay Noir, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. These varieties shine in different ways across these two distinctive expressions.
