Deep crimson. Intense dark plum, blackberry aromas with graphite, black olive, wax polish notes. Beautifully concentrated and generous dark plum, blackberry, roasted nut, paneforte flavours, fine smooth chocolaty textures, lovely mid-plate richness and underlying mocha, roasted chestnut notes. Matured is 95/5% French/American oak, 25% new. A thickly textured and luscious wine, propped by 40yo vines, an old basket press and judiciously appointed oak. Black cherry, iodine, violet, clove and a swathe of anise and pepper grind-laced tannins, long and bullish. A conflation of power and refinement, angled more toward the former. Fidelitous to place. Small parcels of individual vineyard fruit from the highly acclaimed McLaren Vale region were hand picked for this rich traditional Shiraz. The grapes were carefully picked and fermented in traditional open fermenters. Once the desired fruit intensity was achieved, the skins were basket pressed ensuring only the soft tannins were extracted. The wine was matured in French oak barrels for 16 months as individual vineyards components.
The start of the growing season was highlighted by an elongated period of cool weather leading to some variable fruit flowering & set. The remaining period until harvest was relatively smooth but with small crops & good vine canopies an early vintage was very likely. This eventuated and whilst vintage was short & compact, wine quality is outstanding with richly flavoured wines showing brightness of fruit and structural balanced palates.
The 2017 Reynella Basket Pressed Shiraz is a classic McLaren Vale Shiraz, showing fruit sweetness & rich aromas of dark chocolate, cedar spice, ripe plum and dark fruit conserve. The style is built around the sub-region of McLaren Flat which produces rich textured wines full of dark chocolate, plum & smoked meats
