The Barossa Valley is one of the warmest and most consistent wine regions in Australia. Growing Cabernet Sauvignon is generally considered a cool climate affair, but I love the aggressive nature of the variety, being quick growing, vigorous and hearty. Grown on the deep sand around the boundaries of our property, it is forced to push its roots down to the subsoil red clay from where it generates the largest canopies in our vineyard. In the heat of summer, the fruit is shielded from the sun which preserves the vegetative, herbaceous character of Cabernet along with generosity and richness synonymous with the Barossa climate.

Tasting Notes

The nose is showing classic Cabernet Sauvignon characters of cedar, fresh herbs and black fruits, has a slight vanilla essence lift. The palate is rich with cassis, herb rub, fruit cake and is showing some mint of the finish. Great acidity and tannin profile will ensure aging for a decade or two.

About Rusden

Our vineyard is in Vine Vale, our terroir is deep white sand over red clay. We believe that Vine Vale is the most versatile and consistent grape growing district on the Barossa Valley floor.

Our wines have a unique character with balance and structure. They are fruit driven because we believe in our vineyard and we want you to taste the unique flavours in the wines of this particular site. Our range of wines has an obvious house style because they are all made and grown the same way in the same soil.

We believe that we are custodians of the land. Our job is to care for it as best we can and pass it down from one generation to the next. We also pass down the traditions that were taught to us by our forebears.

We tend the vineyard by hand, and more recently as our winery has grown, we adhere to traditional methods in the cellar. Our focus is on traditional Barossa varieties and blends, however we are not afraid to give different varieties a go as Australia’s wine industry is still in its infancy.
