About the Geographe Wine Region

The Geographe Wine Region takes its name from Geographe Bay which in turn is named after ‘Le Geographe’, a French ship which was a part of a scientific and geographic expedition in the early 19th Century.

Just 2 hours south of Perth, the Geographe Wine Region is one of Western Australia’s most exciting wine growing areas. The climate is influenced by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and the Darling Range which runs parallel to the coast and is dissected by a number of river valleys. This topography gives rise to a considerable number of soil types and micro-climates; hence the region enjoys quite a variation in terroir.

This near-perfect Mediterranean climate is ideally suited to growing quality grapes. Add to that, an abundance of pure, fresh water and long sunny days and it is no surprise to find that Smallwater Estate produces local, national and internationally acclaimed award winning red and white wines that are characteristic of the area.

Smallwater Estate, Geographe Wine Region, WA

Smallwater Estate is located on the eastern side of the Geographe Wine Region and just a few kilometres south of Donnybrook, the apple capital of Western Australia.

Smallwater Estate’s 2019 Shiraz won the 2020 "Best Wine of the Region" at Geographe and WA Alternative Varieties Wine Show.

Smallwater Estate was planted in 1993 by John Small and his late wife Robyn with the intention of developing a marron farm and a vineyard to grow contract grapes. For the next ten years or so, most of the grapes were supplied to Cape Mentelle and it wasn’t until 2005 when John decided to make his own wine under the Smallwater Estate label.

In 2011, the Cellar Door and Restaurant were established. The restaurant menu includes dishes that use freshly caught marron from the estate dams and menu choices that all use fresh locally sourced produce to complement the multi-award winning Smallwater Estate range of wines.
