Schell’s Luxe Rosé first made an appearance in 2009 and since then, has only been produced in vintages Pete and Magali reckon have delivered outstanding rosé. Pete Schell explains, “Luxe is selected from only those parcels that have a particular aromatic and textural complexity. We are drawn to sections that display what we call secondary fruit—fresh and dried flowers, herbs, spice, minerality, white and green tea-like aromatics—rather than primary fruit, like fresh berry fruits etc.”

A blend of 66% Barossa Mataro with 26% Cinsault, and 6% Vermentino, this release is the first Luxe since 2017. Like the Spinifex Rosé above, the fruit was harvested by hand and chilled overnight prior to crushing. Before fermentation, the musts were macerated for around six hours. The wine went through a partial malo before maturation in in old French oak puncheons and demi muids. The Vermentino was fermented separately as whole bunches “with the goal of retaining freshness yet developing texture and aromatic depth”.

With more grip, more texture, and more savoury depth than their regular rosé, Luxe is Spinifex’s self-confessed homage to the textural rosés of France’s coastal Mediterranean vineyards—Bandol in particular. It’s incredibly vivid and focused, displaying enticing aromas of blood orange, cassis, pepper and bay leaf. The palate is energetic and chewy, crammed with silken texture and crunchy brightness, rousing to a reverberating, savoury finish. Totally delicious. If Australian Rosé gets any more exciting than this, do drop us a line with the details!

Description

Spinifex Wines owners and operators, Peter Schell and Magali Gely, have had a home in the Barossa Valley for over twenty years and hold a strong commitment to and passion for the Barossa. They also have a strong French connection, both physically and philosophically.

Magali’s family, who up until recently were vignerons with a long lineage in Lunel, near Montpellier, still live in south France, and over the last ten years Peter has worked six French vintages, in Provence, the Languedoc, Bordeaux and Burgundy.

Wine making process at Spinifex Wines

Time spent in the south of France has fuelled their interest in making unique, hand crafted wines with personality, which are generous and honest expressions of the varieties and their provenance.

Spinifex Wines grapes are sourced from a group of dedicated growers in both the Barossa and Eden Valleys, taking advantage of the great diversity of the soils and meso-climates of the Barossa to create wines with balance, character, depth of flavour and Barossan generosity.

Fine Wine Cellars

On the one hand, our role as a merchant of all things wine & spirits could not be simpler. We aim to source the most delicious, the most authentic, and the highest quality products possible from Australia and around the world in order to offer them to our clients. We live or die by how well we perform this task. Of course things are rarely as simple or as easy as they seem. Hunting for wines & spirits is no different. Apart from the months spent travelling, countless days and evenings spent tasting and the outrageous wine expenditure in the name of ‘research’, sourcing quality wine and spirits requires expertise and experience. Understanding the potential of a producer and their products is much more than just a slurp and a spit.
