70/30% Chardonnay/Pinot Noir from an estate vineyard in the Derwent Valley, in conversion to biodynamic. Lubiana’s vintage is a showpiece for the style of southern Tasmanian sparkling, with greater intensity of flavour and structure than the north, yet with all the tension, energy and integrity to live long. 2010 follows the outstanding ’08 and ’09. Chardonnay’s yellow fruits define a core of racy grapefruit, succulent white peach and crunchy Beurre Bosc pear, set to the spice of pinot. Nine years on lees has blessed it with a creamy silkiness and subtle roasted nut and butter complexity. Fine phenolic grip is well enveloped into its creamy folds, perfectly judged dosage and lingering, focused, cool acid line. 93 points. Tyson Stelzer, Halliday Wine Companion

A blend of estate-grown, single-vineyard Chardonnay (70%) & Pinot Noir (30%). The fruit comes from a mix of two terroirs: grey gravelly loams over clay and red loam over gravel. At the time of harvest the vineyards were organically managed, in conversion to biodynamic certification.

The base wines go through 100% malolactic conversion and the wine is according to the méthode traditionnelle. The Grande Vintage wines are made to show off the vintage they were grown in, selecting the best parcels of fruit to give freshness, elegance, balance and intensity. Only made in the best years, they are drier and more refined than the NV and are made entirely from the one vintage.

Our 2010 Grande Vintage was tiraged on the 18th August, five months post-harvest. It spent nine years on lees until disgorging on the 16th of November 2018, with a dosage of 4g/l added at this time. Extra time under cork has allowed gentle development.

Description

Stefano Lubiana Wines exude Tasmania in its purest form – from its soil to your family table.
Our environmentally holistic practices and care for our low-cropping Derwent River estate
follows through to the winery with minimal intervention meeting modern techniques. The
resulting wines are world class quality, to be enjoyed with hearty food and good company.

Tasmania’s first and only biodynamic vineyard

We are Tasmania’s first and only certified biodynamic vineyard, and have been cultivating our vines using biodynamic methods since 2010. This means that our wines are free of all synthetic treatments, additives and pesticides. Instead we travel the alternative path, stepping back in time and using cosmic rhythms to ensure soil regenereation as well as effective vine care through all phases of the year’s seasonal cycles.

These methods enhance our attention to detail in the vineyard and winery, as we’re more alert to the signals of Mother Nature and her messengers. Every season, we’re becoming more attuned to the synergies between our varied soil types, their organisms, the local flora and fauna, and of course our vines.

While we have a strong focus on sparkling wines as well as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, we love experimenting and exploring. Don’t be surprised if you visit the cellar door to find a Blaufränkisch or Malvasia (or maybe a nip of grappa) tucked away behind the tasting bench.

They are wines that taste of where they come from, and though they’re steeped in history and stamped with the signature of their terroir, they’re more than ever relevant – and desirable – to the Australian diner of today.
