Tempranillo (from the Spanish temprano, meaning early) is a grape variety originating inSpain. A relative newcomer to Australia, it is capable of producing a variety of styles depending on climate and winemaking technique. The 2019 is all about vibrant red fruit deliciousness. An elegant, early drinking style that shows just how versatile the Tempranillo variety is in the Hunter Valley.

The grapes are from a beautiful vineyard in the Broke Fordwich sub-region of the Hunter Valley. The vines are situated adjacent to the Hunter River with the imposing backdrop of Yellow Rock. These vines have achieved their balance at a relatively young age and with the assistance of selective fruit thinning throughout the growing season they have achieved optimal ripeness.

In 2019 the grapes were harvested at 13.5 Baume in the third week of February. The fruit was crushed to open fermenters and cold-soaked for 24 hours prior to fermentation. The juice was fermented on skins for approximately 6 days with a combination of hand plunging and pump-over method. The wine was then pressed and half the wine transferred to 2 and 3 year old French barriques. The wine was racked frequently to aerate and soften the tannins. The blended wine was bottled after 18 months oak maturation.

This 2019 Tempranillo shows vibrant red currant fruit aromas with some complex characters of green olive, spice and just a hint of tobacco. The palate has a beautiful silky texture with flavours of liquorice and sour cherry fruits. Built for early drinking but will cellar for 2-3 years.

The Little Wine Company

The Little Wine Company is a boutique winery comprised of husband-and-wife winemaking team Ian and Suzanne Little.

The Little Wine Company was founded in 2000 by Suzanne and Ian Little and specialise in alternative varieties. Both Suzanne and Ian spent their early careers making the traditional varieties of the Hunter Valley – Shiraz, Semillon and Chardonnay. So when the two decided to strike out with their own label, they chose to experiment with new varieties. Now, after more than 20 years of pioneering new and emerging varieties in the Hunter Valley, their range of wines reflects their long and winding road of discovery.

At the time the Littles owned a large vineyard in Pokolbin, however they realised that one patch wouldn’t be enough for the range of varieties they wanted to create. They then established strong relationships with smaller, supportive growers in the Broke Fordwich region to trial these new varieties and have continued these relationships.
