The Touriga (Nacional) grape is a popular component of Portuguese table and ports or fortified wines. It is known for its flavours of ripe plum, cherry, chocolate, and liquorice, as well as its gentle acidity and soft tannins.

It is worth noting that the Touriga grape is now permitted in the Bordeaux region, renowned for Cabernet, due to its ability to thrive in dry and warm Mediterranean climates, such as those found on the Iberian Peninsula.

The wine has a lovely aroma featuring floral notes of dried rose petals and potpourri, complementing the ripe fruits. On the palate are flavours of poached berry, plum, black cherry, strawberry, and cranberry, enhanced with spices of anise and liquorice root. A mild acidity and a contrasting graphite-like minerality give a balanced taste. After maturation in fine French oak, powdery cocoa-like oak tannins and soft spice enhance the relaxed fruit tannins.

The growing season in Margaret River was a return to weather conditions more typical for the region. Good winter rains, a temperate spring, and a warm summer; a textbook progression of seasons for a great vintage. Then a severe bushfire in the Boranup Forest in early December threatened to spoil our entire vintage. Thankfully the professional firefighting skills of the DFES prevented any short or longer-term impact on our vineyards; it was a very close call.

With verasion came the marri blossom and relief that the annual parry with the native, resident birds would be a minor scuffle. Conditions remained warm and dry through autumn, delivering the perfect conclusion to vintage. Moderate yields ensured ripeness and flavour development remained in step until harvest. The excellent early potential of the 2022 vintage is now beginning to show pure and defined varietal focus, ripe berry flavours and supple tannins.

The Touriga was hand-picked and separated into two parcels based on the vineyard plantings of 2008 and 2015. We hand-plunged the grapes to extract the best colour, flavour, and tannins during fermentation in open vats. Each parcel remains on skins for 7 to 14 days after fermentation, subject to the modification of the tannin profiles.

After pressing, the two parcels mature for 24 months in French oak barriques, 25% new. At blending, the parcels are combined to taste, fine-tuned, and filtered as needed. Finally, the wine was given an extended bottle maturation period, allowing it to integrate, soften, and truly express the unique characteristics of the vineyard and grape variety.

Flowstone is born from a culmination of Stuart Pym’s rich winemaking experience and Phil Giglia’s passion for great wine.

Stuart’s winemaking career commenced more than 30 years ago when he moved to Margaret River to help his parents produce with their new wine label Sussex Vale. This vineyard has since become the well-respected Hayshed Hill.

His winemaking experience includes some of Margaret River’s best loved names including Voyager Estate (1991-2000), Devil’s Lair (2000-2008) and Stella Bella (2008-2013). Stuart also worked at Matilda Bay Brewing Company during the peak of their success in the late ’80s and was responsible for several vintages abroad and on Australia’s east coast.

With his partner Janice, Stuart started Suckfizzle in 1996 and Stella Bella in 1999. In 2013 he handed over the Stella Bella winemaking reins and moved to flowstone in a permanent capacity, completing the 30-year family involvement in winemaking.

Stuart and Phil first met, appropriately, at a Margaret River Great Estates lunch in the late ’90s where a joint passion for wine and a firm friendship was born. Ten years later they created flowstone and the first vines were planted in 2004.

While studying at the University of Western Australia, Phil was introduced to the University Wine Club and his love for the drop began. Work at the George Street Cellars in the late 1980s gave him an appreciation for the breadth of world wine and the myriad of styles and stories it contains. It also enabled him to be in close range off the bottles he would never be able to afford! Phil is now a confirmed wine tragic – which is not a bad thing at all.
