Mouth-watering Pinot Gris with lovely notes of crunchy pear, yellow nectarine, white peach, lemon and lime. There’s hints of spice and ginger, with fresh lemon peel and some savoury, saline characteristics.

A blend of three vineyards in the sub-regions of Shoreham and Red Hill. A combination of machine and hand-picked fruit. Oxidised juice inoculated in tank and then sent to old puncheons and barriques with full solids. Wine underwent MLF in oak and was transferred to tank with solids in June for stabilisation. Cross-flowed and then bottled in August with only one small addition of SO2 prior to bottle. – Will Byron, Onannon

Mornington does a good line in Pinot Gris, and Will Byron is a very good winemaker. And kind of handsome too, though that doesn’t influence my rating. Well, maybe a little.

This is very good. It’s classic Gris, but shows some restraint. I’m thinking nashi pear and spice, a musky and floral/vanilla perfume. It’s fresh, but delivers flavour, and the gently chalky texture is most excellent, offering a crisp yet slippery finish of excellent length, and my word, this is a textbook example of how to knock out a Pinot Gris that’s balanced and lovely to drink. 94 points. About Onannon

Overlooking Port Phillip Bay, our home base is a five acre vineyard in Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula. Planted primarily to the MV6 and 777 clone of Pinot Noir we have been making wine from this vineyard since 2009.

In 2014 we took over full management of this special place. In addition we have we building relationships with various growers on the Mornington Peninsula to source parcels of outstanding fruit.

Onannon is three people Will Byron, Sam Middleton and Kaspar Hermann. We make wines that speak a little of ourselves and a lot of the place. We each contributed the last letters of our surnames to make Onannon.
