Excellent hue and depth, an early harbinger of a very good vintage, the bouquet and palate living up to the promise. It is a broad-shouldered, luscious and rich wine, borrowing some dark chocolate from McLaren Vale, adding licorice and plum fruit flavours. 95 points. James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2023

Grapes for Heartland Directors’ Cut Shiraz are selected from some of the best Shiraz vineyards in the region. These vineyards are chosen for the consistent intensity and texture of the fruit. The strictest pruning techniques are used. The fruit for Directors’ Cut Shiraz was harvested at night and then crushed to small, open-top stainless-steel fermenters. After 24 hours of skin contact, fermentation kicked off with our Rhône isolate yeast. Following 10 days of cool fermentation on skins with pumpovers three times daily, the wine was transferred to French and American oak hogsheads for 12-14 months’ maturation. In 2019 we limited ourselves to 40% new oak to ensure the fruit remained the focus.

In appearance, an opaque mulberry core softens to a thin crimson rim. The nose is blackberry jam with complementary aromas reminiscent of a Turkish spice bazaar. The palate offers purple fruit with hints of rosewater and rich aniseed. The finish is long and refreshing. – Ben Glaetzer, Heartland

Top of the pile Shiraz expression where subtle volatiles rise out of a dark fruit and fine oak matrix lying deep in the glass. As you taste, a tempered richness reveals itself, gathering momentum with pure fruit to the fore, encouraged though not dominated by 12-14 months of French and American oak maturation, 40% new. Impressive for that alone, this wine’s completeness and assured medium- bodied styling are rendered superbly. 95 points. Tony Love, Wine Journalist

About Heartland Wines

The Heartland story began in the late 1990’s when winemaker Ben Glaetzer became excited about the outstanding quality of fruit being grown in some of South Australia’s lesser-known regions, in particular Langhorne Creek.

Together with industry veterans, Scott Collett, Grant Tilbrook and more recently Nick Keukenmeester, they grew Heartland into an award-winning winery.

“A really important point I want to get across is we’re not a group of investors that have got together and poured cash into it for the sake of doing it. We are at the coalface of it.”

Today Heartland sources all of its fruit exclusively from Langhorne Creek and makes only red wines.

Heartland is the essence of Australia’s Langhorne Creek, a region that typifies Australian texture, balance and spice at its finest. Heartland grows and selects grapes with the most flavour per acre through careful vineyard management and years of collective expertise.

The brilliant Ben Glaetzer gives focus and expression to these flavours in the winery. Heartland is the place between the vines that offers the best view of the gum trees.
