About Arila Gardens Winery

Hand-crafted from small parcels of some of the Barossa’s most prestigious fruit. We believe we have created a collection of truly remarkable wines from our family’s vines at our Arila Gardens property.

In 2006, the Clays settled in the Barossa Valley, where Adam dedicated a decade as a winemaker for Penfolds, one of Barossa’s most iconic wineries. Today, Arila Gardens Winery reflects their extensive knowledge, global influences, and deep respect for the land, offering wines that are both authentic and exceptional.

Adam Clay’s pursuit of exceptional wine began nearly two decades ago, with a passion for tasting and crafting wines at the pinnacle of quality. Together with his wife, Marie, whom he met while studying Oenology at the University of Adelaide, they embarked on an extraordinary journey, traveling and working in renowned wine regions worldwide.

Their time in Italy shaped their winemaking philosophy, working in the Tuscan cellars of Frescobaldi and gaining a deep appreciation for European craftsmanship. Later, Adam gained further expertise in California at Pellegrini, where he focused on small-batch, handcrafted Pinot Noir from the Russian River. These experiences enriched their skills and broadened their perspectives beyond conventional Australian winemaking.

Arila Gardens draws its name from the Aboriginal word “Arila,” meaning “sand, land, and earth,” paying homage to the original stewards of the land and the unique blend of sand, ironstone, and quartz beneath the vines. Adam and Marie Clay lovingly refer to their vineyards as “gardens,” meticulously tended and cherished. Each vineyard block, named for its distinct soil type, represents a blend of old and young vines, some dating back to 1900. This diversity creates wines with layers of character, complexity, and a profound sense of place.
