Grown on our farm near the village of Eldorado on decomposed red granite buckshot soil. This narrow seam of soil has been washed down from the nearby Beechworth hills by the Reedy Creek over millions of years. Eldorado shares many climatic similarities with Sicily, the homeland of the Nero d’Avola grape.

It has been 13 years since we decided that Nero d’Avola would be a good fit for our unique soil and climate at Eldorado. Along the way through a combination of collaboration with other pioneers of the variety in Australia and those who have had generations of experience with the variety in its native Sicily we have learnt a lot about growing this variety well.

In recent years we have undertaken a process of stripping all bar the top three leaves from the vines just prior to flowering. We have found this to have a remarkable effect on the grapes. The pH is lower, concentration improves and the colour much more vivid, although a large investment to complete in the vineyard the results in the winery have meant it is well and truly worthwhile.

7 different Nero d’Avola ferments were undertaken in the winery in 2019. They were progressively picked from the vineyard over roughly a 3 week period at varying levels of ripeness. Components from all 7 of those ferments made it into the final blend of the 2019 Comrade Nero d’Avola. 20% of the free juice was extracted from all destemmed not crushed grapes on arrival to the winery, the aim, restrained intensity. All wild ferments commenced within a couple of days post cold soak.

Ferments included:

• 100% Whole bunch
• 40% Whole Bunch
• Whole Berry Early Pick 12.8 Baume
• Whole Berry Late Pick 13.9 Baume
• Barrel Ferments (Whole berry late pick ferments with extended maceration (21 days) in custom made French oak Puncheon fermentors.

The diversity of winemaking and large number of small ferments were employed with the hope of adding layers of complexity that can be difficult to attain with this variety. Lightly hand plunged once a day and gently basket pressed before spending 18 months in seasoned French Oak Puncheons and Barriques resting on full lees. Only the best barrels were selected to assemble the final blend. Unfined.

Reviews
Deep, bright purple/red hue. Smoky oak or sulfide bouquet at first sniff, moving into a lovely, sweet entry to the palate. The tannins are ample but ripely supple, & fruit sweetness lingers. Superb dark cherry & blackberry aromas developed with time. A delicious wine that grew & grew in the glass. Outstanding value. 95 Points – Huon Hooke, Real Review, Apr ‘21
