95 Points Halliday Wine Companion 2025

The Bogan is a true expression of a full-bodied Shiraz, born from estate vines with an impressive average age of 65 years. The 2021 vintage was nothing short of spectacular, with cool, dry conditions in Barossa leading to exceptional reds and whites. The growing season was ideal, with good yields and an array of aromas and flavors emerging from the grapes.

The reds, in particular, feature soft, supple tannins, making them delightful to enjoy now, but also promising great rewards for those who choose to cellar them. This vintage was a standout, earning a perfect 10/10 for its overall quality.

Imagine slipping into your favorite flannelette shirt—comforting, familiar, and full of character. That’s precisely what you can expect when you uncork the Kaesler Bogan, a Shiraz that embodies warmth and personality. Crafted by Reid Bosward, this wine is a testament that being labeled a ‘country bogan’ is no hindrance to creating an exquisite Barossa Shiraz. This wine defies class, offering a stylish red that speaks to all, regardless of where you come from.

At Kaesler, we’re committed to more than just making great wine; we’re dedicated to enhancing the land that gives us these exceptional grapes. Through regenerative farming, we don’t just sustain our environment—we actively improve it, ensuring that our precious old vines are left in better condition for the future.

From one of the greatest vintages in history comes perhaps the finest Bogan ever crafted in its 20-year legacy. This Shiraz is a rich, pure classic that will only improve with age, promising 20 years of graceful maturation. Handpicked grapes undergo meticulous winemaking processes, including fermentation in tanks for 8-9 days, followed by careful aging in seasoned French oak for 15 months.

In the glass, the Bogan gleams with a bright, deep crimson hue, tinged with purple. On the nose, you’ll discover dark plum and blueberry aromas, accented by savory hints of charcuterie and a touch of oak char. The palate is quintessentially Bogan—full-bodied, dense, and rich, with layers of dark fruit flavors unfolding across the tongue, finishing with soft, fine tannins that leave you wanting more.

The Kaesler Bogan isn’t just a Shiraz; it’s an experience—a wine that invites you to embrace its character and savor every drop.

About Kaesler Wines

The first owners of the Kaesler vineyards were Silesian pioneers who came to the Barossa Valley in the 1840s and took up 96 acres in 1891. By 1893 they had planted the entire acreage with Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro (Mourvedre) and White Hermitage vines. Some of the gnarled dry-grown Shiraz still remains and provides the backbone of the intense wines we produce.

Over time, the Kaeslers pulled vines to plant fruit trees and to keep horses and cows. The site now home to the Kaesler Cellar Door; the old brick horse stable now holds a private tasting room, with Ernst Kaesler’s old house, now the Kaesler Cottages accommodation.

The remaining vines mostly consisted of red and fortified varieties, some Grenache added in the 1930’s and more Shiraz planted in the 60’s and 70’s. These plantings accounting for some of the celebrated aged Shiraz we produce today.

The Kaesler vineyards were owned and operated by the Kaesler family from 1893 to 1986. In 1999, renowned agribusiness entrepreneur, Ed Peter and established winemaker Reid Bosward, together with business partners, seized the opportunity to purchase the property. They immediately set about regenerating the famous old vines and creating legendary wines. At this time, the Kaesler vineyards consisted of over 70% red wine vines, all 40 years of age or more.

Having access to premium old vine material, the winemaking and viticulture team set out to produce bold estate wines representative of the Barossa Valley. The intensity of the old vine Shiraz was the inspiration behind the production of the “Old Bastard.” Classified as “Outstanding” by Langtons with its rich and intense fruit style, the Old Bastard Shiraz paved the way for Kaesler. A string of highly celebrated wines followed suit, including the ‘Alte Reben’ and ‘Old Vine’ Shiraz, the infamous ‘Bogan’ Shiraz, Avignon Grenache blend and the approachable Stonehorse range.

A 5 star James Halliday rated winery, the winemaking team with their distinct style and modest winemaking techniques, consistently produce wines rated over 90 points by industry peers and publications.
