Geoff Weaver’s Sauvignon Blancs have always had a flavour wheel and mouthfeel of their own. A plaited rope of gooseberry, exotic tree fruits and white peaches and cream make this a compelling wine. The Adelaide Hills and sauvignon balance have always given each other a hug.
94 points. James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion

Crop levels of 3.1kg/vine were close to our long-term average of 2.7kg/vine. Harvest was in early March, two weeks earlier than our long-term average harvest date of 24th March. There is a clear trend to earlier harvest dates over the 31 years we have been growing Sauvignon Blanc. Hand picking occurred in mild weather from 4th to 6th March. Heat degree day summation for the year was 1335; a little over our long-term average of 1270 Heat Degree Days (HDD). We saw a cool start in October and November and a warm finish in February and March mercifully free of extreme heat.

Our vines show the benefits of maturity with good balance of crop and leaf plus more stable crops. The growing season rainfall was 420mm of rain October to March above our long-term average of 230mm. Of this 312mm fell in the October to December period. Disease pressure was consequently high early in the season but ripe healthy grapes were harvested. We grow our grapes without irrigation and they benefit, I believe, from deep roots sustaining them rather than more shallow ones subject to downpours and dry spells.

We crush, destem, gently air bag press the grapes. Clear settle juice and cold ferment to dryness. No need for additions of acid (which is so common in Australia) Our approach is to make the wine as naturally as possible with minimal additions. The fresh aromatics of the fruit are retained and, with gentle air bag pressing, harsh extractives are not generated.

It shows lifted aromas of pear, cut grass and hints of flowers. Fresh, fragrant and complex. Fresh fruit with a lively, juicy richness on the palate and a lingering, fresh acid edge to the finish. Full, long and delicate. Lively, tightly structured wine but with a generous, supple mid palate and a fine, long, savoury finish. – Geoff Weaver

Description

Geoff Weaver Wines is a family-owned wine business, established in 1982, and run by the former Hardys chief winemaker Geoff Weaver. One simple thought drives their winemaking; grow grapes of excellence in a site carefully chosen to suit the variety. The Lenswood region in general, and their site in particular, is beautifully suited to make wines of power and finesse with its cool, even temperature spectrum which allows full flavour development combined with high retained acid levels crucial to the making of fine savoury table wines.

Our vineyard lies high – about 500 to 550 metres above sea level – in the Adelaide Hills near Lenswood in South Australia.

Vines on our site grow in ancient soils with low natural fertility and ample cold air drainage, ensuring their flavour-producing metabolism is not restricted. With average rainfall of 1134mm, irrigation is rarely required and the vines have a steady but restricted water supply to nourish them.

Canopy lifting is used to help light reach the grapes. Hand pruning allows close control of crop level and foliage density, crucial in cool vineyard areas. All efforts are directed to cultivating fine flavour in the grapes. Each season brings further maturity to the vines and continued refinement of our methods.

Our wines are known for their fine, delicate flavours. Crisp and nuanced, they’ve received acclaim including multiple inclusions in the James Halliday top 100. We are a five red star winery, Halliday’s highest accolade. Fully ripe grapes are hand-picked, with low yields and consistently high quality.
