If you are new to this Bibendum staple, Rocco di Rocca is 97% Nebbiolo with a smattering of Cabernet Franc. The Nebbiolo hails from a vineyard at Magliano Alfieri in the first hills of the Roero region. The vines were planted in 1967 and 2002, and the family purchased the parcel in 2016. The Cabernet Franc comes from 20-year-old estate vines in Barbaresco. Roero’s sandy soils gift a lighter, brighter, earlier-drinking wine than the Rocca Nebbiolo d’Alba—a Nebbiolo party in a glass. The wine’s upbringing (solely in tank) and early bottling helps keep to this theme.

The apple never falls far from the tree here. The 2021 is typically lip-smacking, perfumed and crackling with energy. It has a red fruited sweetness almost reminiscent of Pinot Noir but with a firmer backbone of mouth-watering acidity and tannin. If the entire current release borders on best-ever territory, there is no debate here. And, it is ludicrously good at the price.

“The 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo Rosso di Rocca is a blend mostly of Nebbiolo from Roero with a touch of Cabernet Franc left over from the experimental days in Piedmont. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, spice, lavender and dried herbs all grace this exquisite, affordable Piedmont red. Drink it over the next few years.” 92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Description

Winemakers since four generations.

Our history starts in the mid 1940’s when Albino Rocca’s father Giacomo started in the wine business initially selling grapes from family vineyards and later making his own wine that was sold in demijohn.

Thanks to the inheritance of some of our most precious vineyards in the 1960’s our grandfather was able to start what is now our winery Albino Rocca. Albino’s hard work and his strong support of our father Angelo Rocca laid the foundation that created a family winemaking tradition that has grown internationally over the years.

Our history has been built together, year by year. First through the gradual acquisition of vineyards and the production of not only Nebbiolo, but also Dolcetto and Barbera in addition to our continuous effort to evolve the quality of our Barbaresco – which starts in the vineyards and continues in the cellar.

Fine Wine Cellars

On the one hand, our role as a merchant of all things wine & spirits could not be simpler. We aim to source the most delicious, the most authentic, and the highest quality products possible from Australia and around the world in order to offer them to our clients. We live or die by how well we perform this task. Of course things are rarely as simple or as easy as they seem. Hunting for wines & spirits is no different. Apart from the months spent travelling, countless days and evenings spent tasting and the outrageous wine expenditure in the name of ‘research’, sourcing quality wine and spirits requires expertise and experience. Understanding the potential of a producer and their products is much more than just a slurp and a spit.
